WEEKLY MEDITATION
THIRD SUNDAY OF ADVENT
"John
the Baptist"
Every year we hear about John in the second and third weeks
of Advent. John's preaching and ministry are the forerunner to
Christ. His words and actions prepare others for the message of the Lord.
Yet when it comes right down to it, John is not an easy
person to listen to. His presence is forceful; his message is
vigilant. God is coming into the world with might and power to judge
humanity. Clearly, this is not the "warm and fuzzy" sort of
individual that speaks of love and mercy.
John's job has a specific intent. He comes to the
world like a spiritual bulldozer to "prepare a way" for the
Lord. He speaks to the people of fairness, common sense, and
integrity. He exhorts the people to repentance; his words strike the
heart and tear away anything that might veil us from the truth of our souls.
He's not exactly the sort of person you would have over for
a nice dinner and conversation! In fact, John's presence is the
equivalent of a drill sergeant, whipping into shape the soft spots in our
hearts and making us ready to receive the Lord and listen to his words.
Somewhat intimidating, his purpose is simple: get ready!
John's message serves as a complement to the other readings
this Sunday: joy, gladness, exultation, and thanksgiving. Simply
put, God is coming into our world; proclaim the good news!
These words, full of life and hope, can easily lose their
force in our comfortable world. Joy cannot be faked and it cannot be
manipulated. Either we are ready to experience the Lord (and thus truly
rejoice) or we are deluding ourselves with a commercially created, artificial,
forced "happiness" that is hollow and shallow.
So what? We need both. We need John's message to
cut through the webs woven by deceit and sin. We seek repentance to
prepare our hearts and be cleansed by the grace and forgiveness of God.
Yet we come to this knowledge with hope and joy; indeed, the Lord enters our
world out of love for us!
Are we ready? Do we repent of our sins so that the
love of Christ can fill us with peace? Is the hope that we profess rooted
in the reality of our faith and strengthened by the power of the Holy
Spirit? These are the questions which surface as we light the third
candle on our Advent wreath.
