WEEKLY MEDITATION

First Sunday of Advent

December 5-6, 2009

It is often said that John the Baptist is the last of the Old Testament prophets. A prophet is someone who has received a message from God which he or she is then called to deliver to its intended recipient. In the Old Testament, some prophets were called by God to bring messages of warning to the chosen people calling them to repentance such as was the case with Jonah. Others, like Isaiah were called by God to foretell God’s plan of salvation as it was unfolding. Prophets were visionaries; they were proclaimers; they were, so to speak, the mouthpieces of God.

In the gospels we are given a picture of John as a bit of both types of prophet. The gospels tell us that he taught a baptism of repentance; calling God’s people to reform their lives in light of the Kingdom of God which was at hand in the incarnation of Jesus. But, the gospels also tell us that John was one who foretold the coming of the Christ. There is, for example, the well known story of John telling the crowd that he is not the One, but that there is one to come after him whose sandals he is not worth to unfasten. And, then there is the gospel for this Sunday which paints John a prophet in the tradition of Isaiah proclaiming that he is the voice of, “one crying in the wilderness, ‘prepare the way of the Lord.’” Not only is john in the tradition of Isaiah, but he is the fulfillment of a portion of what Isaiah prophesized.

Just like the people of biblical times, we today are in need of prophets. We need to hear the call of God to repent. We need to hear about how God is present in the world. We need to see prophetic faith that proclaims the coming of the Kingdom and its presence in our midst.

Last Sunday, Bishop Christenson challenged us, as we entered the season of Advent, to reflect upon the cardinal virtues and to choose one of them as an area in which we hoped to grow during the season leading up to Christmas. In this case, for us the bishop’s voice might have been the prophetic word calling us to repentance in the midst of the wilderness of our modern society. We may hear that same voice in the teachings of the saints, from reading scripture, in the voice of a friend or a person in need.

Most of the time I think of myself as having average luck compared to others I know. There are also some ways in which I think that I am one of the select few in this universe to be chosen to be as lucky as I am. In those ways, I am one of the luckiest people on the earth. I know this because, out of nothing that I have done to deserve so great a gift, I have been blessed to have been able to spend more time in the wilderness than the average person and, perhaps more than most people. For me the experience of the wilderness is the greatest prophet or preacher I could ever hope to encounter. The wilderness can tell me of the One who created her, can remind me of my place in His creation, and calls me over and over to repent.

The wilderness may not do this for everyone, but it does for me. I hear that voice of God calling out in the wilderness, “Prepare! Make way! Repent!” For other people, that voice may come from other sources.

John the great prophet who stood between the Old and the New Testaments, tells us to repent and foretells the coming of the Kingdom, but he never tells us what to do to prepare or to repent. So, each of us must seek out that same Voice that spoke so long ago through John and listen to what it has to say to us today. That voice may come from a different source for each of us. But we must go and listen to it and make the preparations that we are called to make, to tidy up our own houses and hearts so that we may be ready to welcome the One who comes.

Peace and Blessing
