STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE
Both widows in today’s readings gave all they had to the
work of the Lord, one using all her remaining food to feed Elijah and the other
offering her two copper coins to the temple treasury. Faithful stewards give all that is asked and
trust the Lord to be faithful to His promises.

WEEKLY MEDITATION
32nd SUNDAY
IN ORDINARY TIME
"Giving
all that we have"
In my short life thus far, I have yet to sacrifice out of my
basic needs. Growing up in
I have never been called upon to risk my life in war; I have
not yet experienced great physical or emotional suffering; and I know from my
travels that I have been blessed in a multitude of material ways that other
people have never received.
Simply put, I recognize that my life has been sheltered and
protected in ways that millions of people (or rather billions) have never
known. Sacrifice for me has meant sacrifice out of my ample abundance - I
still have to learn what it's like to give out of my need.
The readings this week paint a different view.
There are two stories in the Scriptures today that speak of
a faith that trusts entirely in God. In both situations we see where the
person in question gives, not out of their abundant excess, but out of their
most basic survival - be it food or money.
The reading from 1st Kings shows a widow who literally gives
her last bite of food away to a stranger, even in the presence of her starving
child. Trusting in the words of Elijah, she puts her faith in God and
finds herself fed for a year.
The Gospel reading from Mark reveals Jesus explaining how a
poor widow has given more by her two coins than all the other wealthy people
combined. Her gift of pennies is worth more in the sight of the angels
than any gift of gold or silver.
What's at stake here is the complete and radical trust that
God will provide. These two widows had NOTHING else to rely on; they gave
all they had and put themselves in the hands of God. For this reason
their gift is valued beyond price.
Such trust reminds me just how far I still have to go in my
own journey of faith. Having never been tested at extremes, I pray that
my own life will grow as I follow Christ.
For many of us, especially in
Fr. Glen Baptiste, C.R. will be with you this weekend while
I am away on pilgrimage in

Question for Children: What part of your own possessions are you called to share?
Question for Youth: When you think of your own life, do you consider yourself
rich or poor? How do you spend your
money? Is there anything you should be
doing differently?
Question for Adults: When do you know that you have given away enough?

The Wonder of Advent:
Listening to Hope’s Whisperings
In this season of expectant longing
and anticipation, we are invited to listen to hope’s whisperings deep with our
lives. We will explore ways of
developing an active attitude, a waiting posture of listening so that we can
awaken and recognize these glimmers of hope in our ordinary life experiences. We will consider ways to sustain this mystery
of hope within us so that we may bring the light of hope to others and to the
world.
