THANK YOU!
A
heartfelt thank you from the Rozowski family.
We know that a lot of time, effort and
energy went into organizing the spaghetti dinner. Thank you to all who came and showed support
for our family. A very
special thank you to all who donated their time, baked goods, and auction
items. Our family is so grateful
to have such a wonderful and caring church family. Thank you for your support and prayers as we
continue on our battle.

$32,000.
WEEKLY MEDITATION
Thirtieth
Sunday in Ordinary Time
October
24-25, 2009
In
the gospel reading for this Sunday we are presented with the story of “Blind
Bartemaeus.” In this story, when the blind man is brought before him, Jesus
asks what it is that he wants. This, at first might seem a strange question because,
one would imagine that Jesus could see that the man was blind, and, on seeing
that, would assume that the man wanted his sight. Nevertheless, Jesus asks him
what it is that he wants almost as though he was anticipating something more.
Bartemaeus, in turn, replies, “Master, I want
to see.” Again one might wonder what was going through his head. Perhaps he was
thinking, “Can’t he see that I am blind? Can’t he tell what it is that I need;
that I want?” The scripture relates that he did receive his sight, as he asked.
But, to paraphrase the immortal words of Paul Harvey, “What’s the rest of the
story?”
Perhaps
that day, Bartemaeus did not only regain his power to see (his physical sight).
Perhaps he gained much more. For, Jesus says to him, “Your faith has saved
you.” I think, that in order to understand this story,
one has to ask themselves what exactly Bartemaeus was asking for when he asked
to see. Was he merely asking for the gift of physical sight? Or was he asking
for the gift to see with the eyes of faith? On the other hand, was he asking to
have the sight to see as Jesus did? Perhaps the answer to all three questions
is, “Yes.” For, it was only after he had come to see with the eyes of faith
that he knew the extent of his blindness went beyond physical blindness. And,
it was only then that he knew who Jesus was and what it was that he could do
for him. Then, when he had embraced who Jesus was, he was able to follow him;
to walk in his footsteps and to do his work. In so doing ,
he came to see as Jesus did.
We
are like Bartemaeus. We are all blind to one extent or another. For some of us,
that means that we have limitations on our physical ability to see. But, all of
us, regardless of how perfect is our physical vision, are blind.
We
are blind to the extent that we fail to see the homeless within our community.
We are blind to the extent that we fail to recognize the need of those who live
and work with us and stand among us in church. We are blind to the extent that
we fail to see our way to show compassion for those children of the Father who
are in want. We are blind when we fail to recognize the love of God in the
faces of those around us, in the new spring, in the face of a new born, in the
beauty of a sunrise, in a cold, clear sip of water. We are blind when we
worship the false gods of money, popularity, sex, or power. We are blind when
we fail to love the loveless, embrace the repulsive, feed
the hungry. We are blind when we fail to recognize the extent of our blindness
and because we think that we have such clarity of vision.
I
find this Sunday’s gospel story to be humbling. It reminds me of just how blind
I am and I find that often, I must stand by the side of the road with
Bartemaeus and utter his plea. “Master, I want to see.” “I want to see you,
Lord I want to see as you do. I want to see!”
Peace and Blessing.

much obscenity and indecency in the market place and media today. We need to take a firmer stand and object and

businesses that respect community standards.
