STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE
All discipleship involves mission. The bishops’ pastoral letter on stewardship
reminds us, “Every member of the Church is called to evangelize, and the
practice of authentic Christian stewardship inevitably leads to evangelization.

THANK YOU!
Thanks to all who came to the Polka Mass & Street Dance. It takes many people working together to make
an event like this possible. I
appreciate the efforts of all who made the day a success. The proceeds from the School’s Food Sale

DIOCESAN SERVICES APPEAL
Thank you
for filling out a Diocesan Services Appeal Envelope. Last weekend 206 parishioners turned in their DSA envelope. For those who did
not fill one out, please do so before you leave church today. No gift is too small, and our parish is

29TH SUNDAY

“Behind the
Scenes”
In High School I had the opportunity to act in several
plays. Being in the play was a wonderful experience: learning a
character, building sets, finding props, working with friends to make a
production come to life – all these elements (and many others) made my time in
drama productions a rich blessing.
My usual work was acting. Out on stage, my part in the
play was always easily observed. People who attended the play saw me in
character, and they had no difficulty when I would talk about the work I did to
prepare. Because I was out in front, it was clear what I did to
contribute to the performance.
Yet through my time I came to learn that there is an equally
important group of people who are seldom in view. Working “behind the
scenes,” the stage crew is composed of those individuals who build the sets, do
makeup, place props, and move furniture and backdrops between acts. Often
their presence is taken for granted; because people seldom see the work they
do, they do not realize the crucial role they accomplish.
Life has many moments that are very similar to a drama
production. There are times when we stand out in front, seen by those around
us, taking an active role in the lives of others. There are also times
when we find ourselves working in secret, doing good deeds anonymously or
allowing someone else to receive the credit.
Whether we are on stage or behind the scenes, we have the
opportunity to share the gift of our lives with others. What’s hard is
that we can want the attention and importance that comes with being seen –
forgetting that sometimes our service comes through simple (and often
thankless) ways.
In the Gospel we find the disciples caught in a familiar
debate – who is most important. As tempers start to flare Jesus offers a
simple reminder: our lives are meant for one another, shared through
loving service and respect.
Obviously, this is not always easy! Indeed our desire
to be important and respected can sometimes block us from recognizing the
importance of those in our midst. Our challenge is to see in one another
the face of Jesus. For when we recognize the Lord’s presence in our life,
we find ourselves grateful for the chance to be a part of God’s great drama.
Fr. Andrew Ricci
Question for Children: Name some way that you can serve others?
Question for Youth: Jesus changed the way we think of leadership to be someone
who serves others. How are you a leader
in school, your family, the parish and/or your community?
Question for Adults: What are some times in your own life when you have the
chance to be last instead of first?
