STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE
In today’s Gospel, Jesus asks the rich young man to give
away all that he has in order to have treasure in heaven. But he is unable to free himself from his
possessions, and so he goes sadly away.
Does what I own keep me from following Jesus?

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK
WORLD
OCTOBER 18TH
Pope Bendict’s message for the 83rd World
Mission Sunday, which is observed on October 18, has the theme: “The nations will walk in its light.”
The Pope’s
message says, “The goal of the Church’s mission is to illumine all peoples with
the light of the Gospel as they journey through history towards God, so that in
Him they may reach their full potential and fulfillment. That impulse to evangelization, and not any
desire for earthly power, drives all the work of the Church”.
The Pope asks
all Christians to redouble their commitment to participate in the missionary
activity that is an essential component of the life of the Church.
DIOCESAN SERVICES APPEAL
Thank you
for filling out a Diocesan Services Appeal Envelope. Last weekend 195 parishioners turned in their DSA envelope. For those who did
not fill one out, please do so before you leave church today. No gift is too small, and our parish is
trying to reach 100% participation. Our parish “fair share” goal for this year is
$32,000.
WEEKLY MEDITATION
28th SUNDAY
IN ORDINARY TIME
"Possessions
and Discipleship"
The Gospel today has three parts:
1. The story of the rich man
2. The comparison of wealth & the Kingdom
3. The rewards of discipleship
The core of the reading is found in the first part, where
Jesus is confronted by a rich man who wants to justify his religious
practices. After claiming that he has kept the commandments, Jesus
replies:
"You are lacking in one thing.
Go, sell what you have, and give to the poor
and you will have treasure in heaven;
then come, follow me."
At that statement his face fell,
and he went away sad,
for he had many possessions.
Mark
Note these points:
* The man was God-fearing, just, and moral
* The man practiced his religion
* Jesus speaks his words out of love
* Jesus invites the man to be a disciple
* Jesus invites the man to give up his wealth
* The man was sad!!! He could not let go!
The main point of this passage is not about money; it is
about discipleship. Jesus invites the man to come and follow him with his
whole heart. In order to do this he has to let go of his possessions and
make Christ his first priority. Instead, the man goes away sad - his
possessions meant more to him than Jesus!
This Gospel continues to speak to our world today,
especially in
Our reminder today is simple: What is our first
priority? What do we place above all else as we journey through life?
We are invited by the Lord to come and follow him.
Nothing can hinder us in this task. The Lord will demand everything in
this journey: our hearts, our lives, our love, and our possessions.
Fr.
Question for Children: How difficult would it be for you to
give something you treasure to someone else who needed it more than you do?
Question for Youth: What is your most important possession? How hard
would it be for you to give it up?
Question for Adults: How hard is it for you to part with things you
treasure? Do your possessions ever stand in the way of having deeper communion
with God?
