STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE
Today’s second reading warns that a heart consumed with
avarice and envy leads to jealousy, strife, conflicts and disputes. A giving heart, in contrast, can sing instead
with the Psalmist, “Freely will I offer you sacrifice; I will praise your name,
O Lord, for its goodness.”

WEEKLY MEDITATION
25THSUNDAY
IN ORDINARY TIME
"Who
is the Greatest?"
One of the themes in the readings this week relates to the
question, "Who is the greatest?" This was the subject the
disciples were debating after Jesus spoke for the second time about his
passion.
The disciples were on the road with the Lord, and they had
seen the miracles and heard his teachings. They knew from their own experience
the power and wisdom that Jesus offered, and they were challenged by this new
revelation: he would suffer and die.
They were scared and confused; after all, if we had left
behind everything we possess to follow someone with our whole hearts, does it not make sense that we would be a little
worried if that someone starts announcing his death? What will happen to
us? Will we have to suffer also?
So there they were, not talking to Jesus, debating among
themselves (and probably arguing) who was the greatest. Perhaps these
issues were mentioned:
"I'm the smartest."
"I'm the richest."
"I'm the best educated."
"I'm the strongest."
"I'm the most politically powerful."
"I'm the best looking."
"I'm the oldest."
"I'm the youngest."
"I was the first person that Jesus picked."
Can you hear these thoughts surface? Can you imagine
them talking (thinking that Jesus cannot hear them) and debating what quality
makes them the best disciple?
Yet Jesus does something different. First he sits down
(note: he is not "above" them). Second, he tells them that the
greatest disciple is the one who is last and servant of all. Third, he
takes a child and states that to receive a child is to receive Jesus, and to
receive Jesus is to receive the one who sent him into the world.
On the road to the Cross Jesus teaches his disciples that
his way is marked by suffering, service, and humility. Through his own
example the Lord reveals that the greatest in his kingdom is the one who will
reach out to others with a love that is lived with humble service.
May we offer our service, in whatever capacity we possess,
for the greater glory of God!
Fr. Andrew
Question for Children: What are some specific ways in which
you can serve your friends or family members?
Question for Youth: Sometimes, when we strive to be first or be the
one that wins, we hurt others. When has striving to be first hurt others? What
can you do differently in the future to help others to succeed?
Question for Adults: Is the role of being a servant for others easy or
difficult for you to embrace?
