STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE

The good steward must not show favoritism.  The rich may have many material gifts to share, but St. James reminds us in the second reading that God has chosen the world’s poor to be rich in faith and inheritors of God’s kingdom.

WEEKLY MEDITATION

SEPTEMBER 6, 2009

23RD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

"Healing & Choosing"

The readings this week fall into two general categories of themes.
    1.  The power of God's healing,
        which gives us hope.
    2.  When dealing with people,
        not to show partiality,
especially among the rich or poor.

The first theme is found in the first reading, the psalm, and the Gospel readings.  The promise of Isaiah brings hope to the people of Israel.  When the Lord comes among us we are restored; those who are sick are made whole, and the land itself becomes a source of life and vitality.

The psalm picks up this theme, inviting us to reflect on God's goodness - giving praise for what the Lord has done:  in the past, in our present, and in the future to come.

The Gospel demonstrates this theme of healing through Mark's narrative of a miracle.  Jesus heals a man who is deaf and has a speech impediment.  Through his prayer the man is cured and the people (who are astonished) tell others about the incident.

The second theme appears in the second reading.  James uses a specific example to illustrate a very common human trait:  showing partiality to another because of wealth.

What is amazing about this brief passage is that it continues to speak VERY CLEARLY to us even today.  It is a temptation that we know can happen all too easily, especially in our materialistic world.

Both themes are powerful reminders about practical matters of the heart.  In those moments when we are in need of hope, may we remember the power of the Lord's healing love.  In those moments when we choose people because of their money, appearance, or power - may we see with the Lord's eyes and treat all with respect and genuine concern.

Fr. Andrew Ricci
