FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK
KRESS HALL
OUT WITH THE OLD – IN
WITH THE NEW!!
After many years of use we are “retiring” old
folding chairs and heavy 8 foot tables and furnishing our entire Kress Hall
with lightweight, durable and comfortable tables and chairs.
By mid-June
we will have in Kress Hall 12 round white tables and white chairs and 21
rectangular 8 foot tables in almond (through the generosity of the Funeral Luncheon Volunteers). We are not currently able to provide almond
chairs to match the tables without donations from our generous
parishioners. For our many meetings and
events we hold in Kress Hall, comfortable chairs would be a blessing! Providing 8 chairs at each of the almond
tables will cost an additional $3600. If
you are interested in providing funds to assist us in replacing these chairs,
please contact Fr. Dan at the Church Office (392-8511).
TABLE AND CHAIR
Our
“retired” tables and chairs will be for sale in the church parking lot on Friday, June 20th from
Chairs will
be sold for $1.00 each, tables for $10 each.
The items must be removed at the time of purchase. Cash only, please.

VOLUNTEERS URGENTLY NEEDED!!!!!
Our Cathedral Rectory is in a sad state of disrepair
and in dire need of some TLC. It needs
scraping, caulking, puttying, and painting and cleaning, carpets ripped up and
floors sanded and sealed.
Work needs to be done in two phases: inside and outside.
Target date for phase 1—inside: Saturday, June 14. We need about 6-8 reliable self-starting
people to clean, rip up carpets and assess floors. Equipment needs are: buckets, rags, cleaning
supplies, tools to rip up carpets, etc.
Tentative target date for phase 2—outside: Saturday,
August 16. We need 8-10 strong,
reliable, self-starting people to scrape, caulk, putty, prime, and paint the
outside of the rectory. We will need
ladders, scrapers, brushes, caulking guns, putty knives, and people not afraid
to crawl up ladders.
This is your chance to do some very meaningful
volunteer work for your Parish. WE NEED
YOU.
If not you, who?
If not now, when?
Call Sara Fouts at 392-6047
or Tom Henning at 392-2809 to help us out.

THANK YOU
The priest of the Congregation of the Holy
Spirit who was here this past weekend, Girard Kohler, c.S.Sp.,
extends his thanks to the parish for your generous response to his appeal on
behalf of the Spiritans’ missionary activities. He is particularly appreciative of the
personal interest and kindness shown to him during his visit.
Be assured of the prayers of Spiritans worldwide for you and your intentions. Be assured also of their need for place in
your prayers for themselves and for their ministries with God’s lowly ones, the
lonely and the left out.
Do please continue to hold the missions in
your hearts. Please keep the Spiritans in mind.
And continue to witness to the Gospel in your lives.
God bless us all.
WEEKLY MEDITATION
10TH SUNDAY
IN ORDINARY TIME
Matthew 9:9-13
“I have called you by
name; you are mine.” (Isaiah 43:1)
Do you remember the wartime poster of Uncle
Sam with his arm outstretched and his finger pointing as he said, “I want
you!”? Throughout history in the
scriptures God has been reaching out to us to remind us that he really wants
us. A major problem in all of this is
that we usually respond only when we are in trouble. The prophet Hosea has to remind the people of
this in our first reading. The Hebrews
offered many sacrifices to the Lord, but he had to tell them that their inner
spirit was not in their offerings. “It
is love that I desire, not sacrifice” (Hosea 6:6)
The letter to the Romans deals a lot with
the idea of faith. Abraham is given as
an example of a person of faith. He
responded to God’s call right from the beginning. Even when things did not seem to be working
out as promised he remained faithful to the Lord. His faith was so strong that “it was credited
to him as righteousness.” In other
words, it is as if God owed Abraham something because of his strong faith.
However, in the Gospel we learn the real
truth. No one can earn God’s love or deserve to be called to follow him. Matthew is a tax collector, someone who is an
outcast in the society of that time.
Yet, Jesus calls him to follow and Matthew responds immediately. Other outcasts are privileged to eat with
Jesus in Matthew’s home. These people
needed Jesus’ help and he responded with his love and mercy.
Then,
as always, in the call and response, we are asked to share love and mercy with
others. We see this especially in
Matthew’s gospel from the Beatitudes in chapter 5 to the end of the
gospel. This is a difficult thing to do
in today’s society. We live in an
atmosphere where people have to earn
what they get. So if we accept God’s
call, are we willing to give love and mercy as Jesus did to us? Do you suppose that one of the reasons young
men and women are not responding to the call to follow Christ “more nearly” is
that they expect to be given something?
Are they willing to offer “mercy” rather than “sacrifice” as Jesus has
asked? You might want to reflect on how
God’s mercy, love and gift of faith have sustained your life.
Question for children:
How do you help Jesus, as his friend and follower, to do his work today?
Questions for Youth:
Jesus hung out with people who weren’t perfect and yet called them to
follow him anyway. What is imperfect in
you? How does this help you to follow
Jesus?
Questions for Adults:
What is your strategy for making sure you are able to hear when Christ
calls you here today to follow him? How
is that call sounded in your life?
“Because you are
precious in my eyes and glorious, and because I love
you.” (Isaiah 43:4)
