FROM THE PASTORÕS DESK
CONGRATULATIONS, PAUL BIRCH, ON
YOUR SELECTION AS NEW DIRECTOR OF WORSHIP
Bishop
Christensen has selected Paul Birch as the Director of Worship for the Diocese
of Superior. PaulÕs appointment is
effective Friday, August 1, 2008.
Upon
receiving the appointment Paul commented, ÒI am delighted and humbled by this
opportunity to serve our local church.
I have a great love for the Church and especially for Her call to us to
be united with God and with our neighbor through the opportunities for divine
worship that she lovingly offers to all of us.Ó
Graduating
in 1986, Paul had pursued studies in the area of mass communications, photography
and music at UW-Superior. He then
served the Diocese of Superior as Coordinator for Liturgy in 1989 –
1990. Beginning in September,
2002, he served the diocese as Director of the Newman Center Ministry to Young
Adults at UW-Superior. He has also
been employed by the Duluth Regional Care Center as program coordinator and
director.
Since 1992,
Paul Birch has been involved with many aspects of liturgy at the Cathedral of
Christ the King. Paul will
continue his work here at the Cathedral.
In my ten years here at Cathedral, Paul has been an invaluable asset and
colleague in all areas of worship and ministry. May the Lord guide you, give you wisdom and be your strength
in all your endeavors.

OUR
HOLY FATHERÕS MONTHLY INTENTIONS 2008
Respect
for Creation. That the human family may know how to
respect GodÕs design for the world and thus become ever more aware of the great
gift of God which Creation represents for us.
Call to
holiness. That through discernment of gifts
and commitment to spiritual formation, holiness may be promoted among the
people of God.
YOUR HELP IS NEEDED!
We are
looking for volunteers to help with some routine maintenance of the parish
office building. Our current
project is to caulk, scrape, prime, and paint windows to greatly reduce the
amount of heat lost from the building during the winter months. What a great opportunity for you to
donate some of your time to our parish community! There are two dates:
Thursday, August 14, 6pm (prep work; scraping, etc.) and Saturday,
August 16 (lunch will be provided).
Please contact Tom Henning at 392-2809 or Sara Fouts at 392-6047 to
volunteer.
PS Thank you to those who helped with
the carpet removal and painting the floors upstairs, it looks great, and is CLEAN!
PAINT THE TOWN-SUPERIOR
Calling all
painters! This is your LAST
opportunity to help out with Paint the Town, as this is the last year for the
program in our city. If you always
wanted to help paint a home for a deserving member of our community, nowÕs your
chance! Paint day is scheduled for
Saturday, September 6th.
For more information, or to volunteer, please contact Sara Fouts at
392-6047. Thank you!
WEEKLY MEDITATION
Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary
Time/ August 3, 2008
Gospel: Matthew 14:13-21
Jesus said to them, ÒThere is no
need for them to go away; give them some food yourselves.Ó
In the
first reading(Isaiah 55:1-3) and in the Gospel (IMatt.14:13-21) the readings
dwell on themes of eating and drinking, to grain, wine, milk, rich fare, loaves
of bread, fish and leftover fragments.
The celebration is about FOOD and a MEAL- usually associated with the
Covenant between God and the People.
In Eating Your Way Through LukeÕs Gospel, Robert Karris OFM list
sixty references to eating and drinking; In a survey of MatthewÕs Gospel,
Karris counts ninety-four instances of food imagery.
Fr.
Daniel Durken OSB, in his commentary on the Gospel when the disciples
approached Jesus about dismissing the crowd to go into town for food, says, ÓJesus
offers his own solution to the problem.
He didnÕt take up a collection to pay for a catering service. He didnÕt form a committee to discuss
the situation. He didnÕt
miraculously turn the rocks into bread as Satan had suggested in the
desert. So Jesus simply commanded
that the disciples feed this hungry horde right here and now. Five loaves and two fish are woefully
inadequate to feed a vast crowd.
How vast? Matthew tells us, ÔThose who ate were about five thousand, not
counting women and children.Õ Shame
on Matthew for not including the women and children who were just as
hungry. If each of those five
thousand men had a wife and four children, we multiply five thousand by six and
get thirty thousand! If all youÕve
got are five loaves and two fish, you take what you have and go for broke. That is exactly what Jesus did: Ôhe
said the blessing, broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples, who in turn
gave them to the crowds.Õ The mention
of blessing, breaking and giving preview the Last Supper when Jesus Ôtook
bread, said the blessing, broke it, and giving it to the disciples said, ÔTake
and eat; this is my body.ÕÓ So the
emphasis is on a need of the community, the Lord answering that need with
generosity. Is this not what
happens when we gather each week for Eucharist/ the Last Supper? As the Psalm Response of todayÕs Mass
says, ÒThe hand of the Lord feeds us; he answers all our needs.Ó
At Mass,
we have sung often, ÒYou satisfy the hungry heart with gift of finest
wheat.Ó As one commentator pointed
out, we would be amazed at the ways we are satisfied by the Lord: Òwe are
usually nourished with simple food, the ordinary fare of daily life; a student
of years gone by thanks us for our commitment and kindness; our words turn the
fear in the eyes of a patient to relief; we are warmly welcomed into a
gathering of friends; we are touched by the sentiments of a season: the warmth
and glow of Christmas; the joy and hope of Easter. Jesus nourishes us with the simple things of life.Ó
The same commentator says that we are nourished by God
through the ministry of one another, Òagain through simple actions:
distributing bread and gathering up the fragments; visiting the sick and
consoling the grieving; caring for a child and giving aid to an elder; bagging
groceries and directing a choir.Ó
If we but open our eyes we will be astounded at how ordinary actions can
satisfy our hunger and hunger of others.
Remember JesusÕ words, Ògive them some food yourselves.Ó We also remember the GIFT you have
received (JESUS) is a GIFT to be shared.
As Mother Teresa says, ÒDo something beautiful for God each day!Ó Our celebration of Eucharist should
never be routine or taken for granted; remember St. PaulÕs words today:
ÒNothing will separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.Ó Our Eucharist should never be solitary (just
me and Jesus); we are sent forth to be witnesses of Gospel joy in a world of
fragile peace and broken promises!
Fr. Dan
Question for Children: What are the ways that Jesus shows he loves you?
Question for Youth: Jesus
was very attentive to his followers. He cared for them and for their needs.
What are your needs? What can Jesus do to help you?
Question for Adults: In
your experience, what "false obstacles" have you or people you know
experienced separating them from Christ? Things such as divorce? Or marrying
outside the church? Or not attending Mass? Or others?
