STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE

ÒThe Law of Your mouth is to me more precious than thousands of gold and silver pieces,Ó says the Psalmist today.  Does the amount of my offering suggest that I could honestly say the same?

FINANCIAL CONTRIBUTIONS: For July 19th & 20th É192 Envelope Users (190 last week) contributed $6,601.00 in the Regular Collection, $516.50 in the Loose Collection, & $37.47 in the Teen/ChildrenÕs Collection.  Thank you!

FROM THE PASTORÕS DESK

YOUR HELP IS NEEDED!  We are looking for volunteers to help with some routine maintenance of the parish office building.  Our current project is to caulk, scrape, prime, and paint windows to greatly reduce the amount of heat lost from the building during the winter months.  What a great opportunity for you to donate some of your time to our parish community!  There are two dates:  Thursday, August 14, 6pm (prep work; scraping, etc.) and Saturday, August 16 (lunch will be provided).  Please contact Tom Henning at 392-2809 or Sara Fouts at 392-6047 to volunteer.

PS Thank you to those who helped with the carpet removal and painting the floors upstairs, it looks great, and is CLEAN!

PAINT THE TOWN-SUPERIORCalling all painters!  This is your LAST opportunity to help out with Paint the Town, as this is the last year for the program in our city.  If you always wanted to help paint a home for a deserving member of our community, nowÕs your chance!  Paint day is scheduled for Saturday, September 6th.  For more information, or to volunteer, please contact Sara Fouts at 392-6047.  Thank you!

WEEKLY MEDITATION

JULY 27, 2008

17TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Readings:  1 Kings 3:5,7-12; Psalm 119; Romans 8:28-30; Matthew 13:44-52

ÒFor I love your commands more than gold, however fine.Ó  (Psalm 119:127)

When was the last time you had to take a test and fill in some blanks?  King Solomon was given a test something like that and he completed it successfully.  Supposing you were given a similar test that went something like this:  ÒThe reign of God is _____.Ó  How would you complete it?

Just what is this ÒReign of GodÓ in your mind and heart?  Would your answer be something so worthwhile that you would seek it out, pursuing it and sacrificing everything to get it?  Tim Russert in his book ÒBig Russ and MeÓ, tells the story about his fatherÕs great goal of taking care of his family.  For most of his life he worked two jobs.  At one point he was up for a promotion that would have increased his salary rather substantially.  He was approached by a number of men asking him to do something that Mr. Russert considered immoral.  Even though it cost him the promotion he refused to do what they asked.  Indeed he loved GodÕs Òcommands more than gold, however fine.Ó

GodÕs reign has been described as a way of living here and now according to the spirit of the Beatitudes.  Some of the parables show us how this reign is sown in our lives and how the soil of our hearts responds.  Two weeks ago the parable of the sower and the seed spoke of some rocky soil and some soil with thistles and thorns.  These distractions kept the seed from producing good fruit.  So what in your life do you consider the great treasure or pearl of great price?  Are you trying to prepare the soil of your heart to receive these great treasures?   How hard are you working to find them?  Are you willing to sell all in order to purchase them?  Have you found either of these yet?

Question for Children:  If you could be with Jesus, what would you trade from your own things for that?

Questions for Youth:  TodayÕs gospel reminds us that GodÕs kingdom is worth sacrifice.  What do you need to sacrifice in order to follow God in your own life?  Why are you willing to make that sacrifice?

Question for Adults:  Using JesusÕ parable as your starting point, how would you describe in your own words what the Reign of God is for you personally?  Try to use a parable to describe it:  ÒThe reign of God is ___.Ó

ÒBlessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.Ó  (Matthew 5:3)
