STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE
Good
stewards in a parish are like the yeast in todayÕs Gospel. Their selfless gifts of time and talent
help the parish grow and thrive, and their example inspires others to become
good stewards, too.

WEEKLY MEDITATION
JULY 20,
2008
16TH SUNDAY IN
ORDINARY TIME
Readings: Wisdom 12:13,16-19; Psalm 86;
Romans 8:26-27; Matthew 13:24-43
ÒGod himself is my help. The Lord upholds my life.Ó (Psalm 54:6)
How much are we willing to trust
God? There is a frequently told
story about a man climbing a mountain all alone. At one point he slipped and fell a short way before grabbing
a ledge with his fingers. He was
dangling several thousand feet above the ground so he called out for help. A voice responded saying, ÒTrust me,
let go!Ó He looked around and saw
no one and called out a second and third time and got the same answer. After the last response he shouted, ÒIs
there anyone else up there?Ó
From the beginning of creation
God gave everything to us to work with in tending and caring for all of
creation. After the fall he
promised to continue to be with us and help us, but we often donÕt listen. The Hebrew people sought a king other
than God, or trusted in foreign rulers to help them. When they were conquered they wondered why God had abandoned
them. The same question could have
been asked of them as it can be of us:
ÒWho moved away; God or us?Ó
The readings for today all speak of
that kind of trust. Even when we
do not know how to pray God has given us his Spirit to pray for us. The Gospel reminds us that even when
the cares of the world, the weeds, seem to be about to choke us, God will
harvest us into his kingdom and throw the weeds into the everlasting fire. There are three parables in all, and
all of them show us how God can do so much with so little. Like Mary we need to be humble and
trusting and say with her:
ÒBehold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.Ó (Luke 1:38)
Question
for Children: What
are the things that keep you from being a friend of Jesus?
Questions for Youth: The
good and the bad have the same opportunity to rule our life. What are you doing
(bad habits, poor choices, etc) that you need to weed out? Who can help you
with that?
Question for Adults: How
would you describe "the weeds" which have polluted your own faith, or
the faith of people whom you know?
ÒThere is no god besides you who
have the care of all.Ó (Wisdom
12:13)
