WEEKLY MEDITATION
JULY 13, 2008
15TH SUNDAY IN
ORDINARY TIME
Readings: Isaiah 55:10-11; Psalm 65; Romans
8:18-23; Matthew 13:1-23
ÒThus have you prepared the
land: drenching its furrows,
breaking up its clods.Ó (Psalm
65:11)
There are several ways to look at
this parable. One
could look at the ÒseedÓ and reflect on it as the word of God cast profusely
over the earth. Or one could think
of the ÒsowerÓ. Is it God, Jesus,
the Apostles, or all of us? How do
we sow the word of God today?
Finally one could concentrate on the soil. There are four varieties given. A good farmer today probably would have some trouble with
this parable since the modern methods of sowing seeds are so different from
those of JesusÕ time. In his day
farmers often scattered the seed on the ground and then plowed it under. Today the ground is prepared in
advance, somewhat like the verse of the opening Psalm.
In looking at the soil we might
think about various people in the life of Jesus who received the word, but it
had different effects. Or we could
look at ourselves and see that at times we are any one of the four types of
soils. We are not always receptive
for a variety of reasons. So
before we think of sowing the word in others, letÕs look a bit at our own soil.
HowÕs your heart? This was a question we asked people on
some of the parish missions we gave about evangelization. The heart can be a symbol of our whole
life, and indicate how open and receptive we are to accepting anything. In the scriptures we hear about the heart
of God, and the heart of the people.
The hearts of the people in one passage are called Òstony heartsÓ. God says he will replace them with
Òhearts of fleshÓ. These
expressions speak of our relationship with God and with one another. How would you describe the soil of your
heart?
Is your heart broken, humbled,
sad, hardened, anxious, cold, troubled?
Such a heart would have trouble accepting anything from the
outside. However, if your heart is
merry, compassionate, joyful, peaceful, humble, understanding, reflective,
believing, then you would be willing to accept messages from the outside, and
be open to change. And since the
seed to be sown in you is the word of God, then you would become more like Jesus,
the Word of God, and be able then to sow the seed in others. Open your hearts to the words of Jesus
and act upon them.
Question
for Children: Who helps you to grow deeper in your
faith?
Questions for Youth: When the sower, in this weekÕs Gospel,
sowed his seed, not all of it fell on Ògood soil.Ó What can you do in the coming week to make sure that you are
open to God in your life? What is
getting in the way of your being Ògood soil?Ó
Questions
for Adults: Using the parable of Jesus in this
reading, can you describe how faith has been planted in your life? How long did it take for that seed to
land Òon good soil?Ó
ÒDo not let your hearts be
troubled. Have faith In God and
faith in me.Ó (John 14:1)
