STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE
Both the
first reading and the Gospel today speak of hospitality and welcome. Our ministers of hospitality are a most
visible example of using oneÕs time and talents to welcome the people of
God. But the Gospel assures us
that all who give even just Òa cup of cold waterÓ to one of His lowliest ones
will be rewarded.

KRESS HALL
OUT WITH THE OLD – IN WITH
THE NEW!!
After many years of use we are ÒretiringÓ old
folding chairs and heavy 8 foot tables and furnishing our entire Kress Hall
with lightweight, durable and comfortable tables and chairs.
Through the generosity of
the Funeral Luncheon Volunteers, we will have in Kress Hall 12 round white tables and white
chairs and 21 rectangular 8 foot tables in almond. We are not currently able to provide almond chairs to match
the tables without donations from our generous parishioners. Providing 8 chairs at each of the
almond tables will cost an additional $3600. We
have one gift of $1000 toward the purchase of new chairs – thus, we need
another $2600 to complete Kress Hall with more comfortable and stable chairs. If you are interested in providing funds to assist us in
replacing these chairs, please contact Fr. Dan at the Church Office 392-8511.
THANK YOU FROM THE PROVINCE
JESUITS
Dear Fr. Dahlberg,
Thank you for your Parishioners gift of $2,261.00 to the Wisconsin
Province Jesuits to help support our global missionary activities, like the
work of Fr. John Schak, SJ in Argentina.
We appreciate your thoughtfulness and generosity and you can count on a
remembrance in our Masses and prayers for your intentions.
So I thank you again for helping meet the needs of the Wisconsin
Province Jesuits. May God grant to
all of us the gift of his Holy Spirit who enables us to bear joyful witness for
hope to our world through our daily prayers.
Sincerely,
Rev. Richard A. McGarrity, SJ

WEEKLY MEDITATION
Solemnity of Ss. Peter & Paul
June 28-29, 2008
In the gospel reading for this
Sunday, Jesus puts his disciples on the spot. He asks them who people say that
he is. After they indicate that various people have various speculations on the
topic, he asks them directly, ÒBut who do you say that I am?Ó This is perhaps
as important a question for us today as it was for the disciples 2,000 years
ago. It is also a question that can be seen as having more than one layer.
In the gospel story when Jesus
initially asks the question, one gets a sense that the disciples are, for the
most part trying to avoid the question. At first they answer with other
peopleÕs answers. They say that some think Jesus is John the Baptist and some
think he is Elijah. Today, we might have different answers. We might answer
that some think he was just a great teacher. Some think he was just a person
who lived an exemplary life. We might also say that some say he was a prophet
of some kind and that some think he was half crazy or a crackpot. All of these
are true statements.
On a deeper level Jesus is not asking
his disciples who others think he is, but who they think he is. In the story,
it is only Peter who ÒgetsÓ this. It is Peter who, in the end, drops all
equivocation and blurts out, ÒYou are the Christ, the son of the living God.Ó
In so doing, he shows not only that he is aware that the question is not just
one for the masses, but for him personally, and he shows his depth of
understanding of who Jesus is. He makes a profession of faith.
Today, we are not generally asked
this question by Jesus himself,. However, we are confronted by this question
time and time again in our daily lives. Each time a co-worker says something
derogatory about Christian faith, each time a movie or a television show pokes
fun at the Christian faith or seeks to belittle the role of Jesus in salvation,
each time an acquaintance asks us how can we really believe all Òthat stuffÓ
about Jesus or if we really believe that the Eucharist is Jesus, each and every
time that the faith is challenged or put down it is as if Jesus is standing
before us asking, ÒAnd you? Who do you say that I am?Ó
Quite often, we, like the
disciples equivocate or try to worm our way out of the situation. We say things
to sort of smooth things over so as not to offend or alarm our acquaintances.
We donÕt want others to get the wrong idea about us or to think less of us for
our ÒquaintÓ or ÒantiquatedÓ beliefs. Often, we lack the courage to stand up
like Peter and to proclaim the truth of our faith without hesitation.
We Christians, like Peter before
us have been given a wonderful gift. Jesus tells Peter, Òflesh and blood has
not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father.Ó The gift we have is that of
the revelation of the divinity of Jesus and of his role in salvation history
which has been planted in our hearts by our God. How is it then that we so
easily turn our backs upon this divine son of God and fail to proclaim him with
loud voices to all those we meet?
This SundayÕs gospel reading asks
us to ponder how we will respond the next time we are challenged about our
beliefs. Will we have the courage to stand up for what we believe and say, ÒYou
are the Christ, Jesus is the Christ, the son of the living God.Ó
Peace and Blessing.

Arthur Gil de Lamadrid
Question
for Children: Jesus
wants us to help others. What are some ways you can do that for the people in
your family, class, or neighborhood?
Question for Youth: Who are the people you know who are least afraid of sharing their faith
with others? What do they teach you about being a disciple?
Question for Adults: How have you responded in your own Christian life to JesusÕ call to
feed his sheep? Do you recognize this as your own personal invitation from him
to minister to others?
