STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE
In today’s Gospel, Jesus sends out the disciples to meet the
needs of others. His admonition to them
is the same challenge he makes to us: “The gift you have received, give as a
gift.”

GOD BLESS THE FLOWER VOLUNTEERS!!
Sincere and grateful thanks to Theresa LaFlamme
and George Peterson for planting garden and flower boxes that decorate our
Cathedral. Your
Time and Talent is a great gift and work of
art. You make the Cathedral a true
delight in the summer and for all our visitors passing by.
NEED MORE VOLUNTEERS TO HELP SERVE AT FUNERAL LUNCHEONS
We are in need of more
volunteers to work at funeral luncheons, including men if they are
available. We are in desperate need as
so many of the ladies have health problems and are no longer able to work. If you can help out please call Betty Leszcynski at 392-8444.
Thank you.
KRESS HALL
OUT WITH THE OLD – IN
WITH THE NEW!!
After many years of use we are “retiring” old
folding chairs and heavy 8 foot tables and furnishing our entire Kress Hall
with lightweight, durable and comfortable tables and chairs.
By mid-June
we will have in Kress Hall 12 round white tables and white chairs and 21
rectangular 8 foot tables in almond (through the generosity of the Funeral Luncheon Volunteers). We are not currently able to provide almond
chairs to match the tables without donations from our generous parishioners. For our many meetings and events we hold in
Kress Hall, comfortable chairs would be a blessing! Providing 8 chairs at each of the almond
tables will cost an additional $3600. If you are interested in providing funds to
assist us in replacing these chairs, please contact Fr. Dan at the Church
Office (392-8511).
TABLE AND CHAIR
Our
“retired” tables and chairs will be for sale in the church parking lot on Friday, June 20th from
Chairs will
be sold for $1.00 each, tables for $10 each.
The items must be removed at the time of purchase. Cash only, please.
WEEKLY MEDITATION
HAPPY FATHERS’/FAMILY
DAY
Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time
“At the sight of the
crowds, Jesus’ heart was moved with pity for them because they were troubled
and abandoned, like sheep without a shepherd.”
Consider the words of Marian Wright Edelman
(The Measure of our Success, Harper Perennial, a must read for every parent):
“Too many young people – of all colors, and all walks of life – are
growing up today unable to handle life in hard places, without hope, without
adequate attention, and without
steady internal compasses to navigate the morally polluted seas they must
face on the journey to adulthood. As a
result, we are on the verge of losing two generations of Black children and
youths to drugs, violence, too - early
parenthood, poor health and education, unemployment, family disintegration –
and to the spiritual and physical poverty that both breeds and is bred by
them. Millions of Latino, Native
American, and other minority children face similar threats. And millions of white children of all
classes, like too many minority children, are drowning in the meaninglessness
of a culture that rewards greed and guile and tells them life is about getting
rather than giving.”
On this Father’s Day (and earlier, Mother’s
Day) might it not be Jesus’ heart moved with pity for these young people
because they are troubled and abandoned, like sheep without a shepherd. We must take serious the issues confronting
our young people – in a morally corrupt and polluted culture. Are they properly prepared at Home, Church,
and School to have steady internal
compasses (an informed conscience – knowing right
from wrong, good from evil) to make good choices? Do they know that they are God’s children;
and do they know what God expects of them?
Strengthening the Family is a number one concern of Pope Benedict, the
American Bishops and World Synod of Bishops.
Consider these words from the General Directory for Catechesis:
#226 “The witness of Christian life given by parents in the family comes to
children with tenderness and parental respect.
Children thus perceive and joyously live the closeness of God and of
Jesus made manifest by their parents in such a way that this first Christian
experience frequently leaves decisive traces which last throughout life. This childhood religious awakening which
takes place in the family is irreplaceable.”
As one commentator once put it: a child is lovingly conceived, wonderfully received, and religiously reared! Marian Wright Edelman has some helpful
insights on how we can achieve that goal: “The adults in our Churches and
Community made children feel valued and
important. They took the time and paid attention to us. They struggled to find ways to keep us busy.
And while life was often hard and resources scarce, we always knew who
we were and that the measure of our worth was inside our heads and hearts and
not outside in our possessions or on our backs.”
“The legacies that parents and church and
teachers left to my generation were priceless but not material: a living faith reflected in daily service,
the discipline of hard work and stick-to-it-ness, and a capacity to struggle in
the face of adversity. Giving up and
‘burn out’ were not part of the language of my elders – you got up every
morning and you did what you had to do and you got up every time you fell down
and tried as many times as you had to, to get it done right. They had grit, they valued family life,
family rituals, and tried to be and to expose us to good role models.”
“I was fourteen years old the night my Daddy
died. He had holes in his shoes but two
children out of college, one in college, another in divinity school, and a
vision he was able to convey to me, as he lay dying in an ambulance that I, a
young Black girl, could be and do anything; that race and gender are shadows;
and that character, self-discipline, determination, attitude, and service are
the substance of life. I have always
believed that I could help change the
world because I have been lucky to have adults around me who did – in small
and large ways. Most were people of
simple grace who understood what Walker Percy wrote: ‘You
can get all A’s and still flunk life’.”
Were not the disciples summoned by Jesus to
go out and change the world by being good
shepherds? To cure the sick, raise
the dead, cleanse lepers, drive out demons – the
kingdom of heaven is at hand. Are not Parents (Mothers and Fathers) called to
be good shepherds of their
children? As one
author put it – to be attentive, appreciative and affectionate toward one’s children. We honor our Dads, our Moms, for their gifts to us – the gifts of Faith, Love,
and of Hope! As the Gospel of today
states: “the gifts you have received are gifts to be
shared.”
Fr. Dan
Question for Children: Share about small ways in which you
help others around you.
Question for Youth: In this week’s Gospel we hear about the disciples
being sent out by Jesus to serve others. What have you done in the last year to
serve others? How can you be more compassionate to those who are in need?
Question for Adults: Talk about the small ways in which you are sent
to heal, teach, and "give the gift" of faith which you have received.

A Prayer for Fathers

Most gracious Heavenly Father,
We thank you for our earthly fathers, those to whom you have entrusted the responsibility to provide loving protection of their families and guidance of their children. We thank you, also, for our priests and bishops, whose spiritual fatherhood is so vital to the faith of your people.
May our earthly fathers imitate the manly courage of Abraham, Jesse and Joseph, and all the holy fathers of the past in providing wise counsel to the children you have given to their care. And may our spiritual fathers be guided by the examples of Saints Peter and Paul, all the Apostles and their saintly successors. Give them valiant faith in the face of confusion and conflict, hope in time of trouble and sorrow, and steadfast love for you, for their families, and for all your people throughout the world.
Assist all fathers of families, all spiritual fathers, and all Christian men, that through your Grace they may steadily grow in holiness and in knowledge and understanding of your Truth. May they generously impart this knowledge to those who rely on them.
As you, our Heavenly Father, so loved the world, sending your only Son to be our Savior and Redeemer, we ask you to help all men to imitate His fatherly gentleness and mercy toward those who are weak; His humility, perfect obedience to your Will, and fearless witness to your Truth. May their lives be examples to all of heroic faithfulness to you.
We ask your blessing on all those to whom you have entrusted fatherhood. May your Holy Spirit constantly inspire them with justice and mercy, wisdom and strength, fidelity and self-giving love. May they receive your Grace abundantly in this earthly life, and may they look forward to eternal joy in your presence in the life to come.
We ask this through Jesus Christ, your Son and Our Lord, AMEN.
