                                                Fr. Dan

THANK YOU!

I wish to personally thank each and everyone who made the chicken dinner event so successful.  Your readiness to help with all the necessary chores is very much appreciated!  It was a great experience to work along side with all of you.

PARISH COUNCIL NOMINATIONS

The Parish Council Nominating Committee found (4) parishioners to run for Parish Council.  There are 4 present members who are leaving the council.  Because, we could not come up with another candidate – to have 5 for an election, there will not be an election!  With the “advice and consent” of the Council, the Pastor will automatically appoint these (4) candidates to the Cathedral Parish Council.

On behalf of the Parish, I wish to thank sincerely the 4 members leaving the Council:  Gene Bergren, who has served as Council Chair for a number of years, Shari Bong, Lucille LaGesse and Diann Nelson.  Your leadership, your participation and support has been most gratifying.  You truly have built-up the Cathedral Parish Family by your gifts of Time and Talent.

                                                                Fr. Dan

DIOCESAN PASTORAL COUNCIL REPRESENTATIVE: FROM NORTHWEST DEANERY, FROM CATHEDRAL PARISH

Louse Pope was recommended by Fr. Dan to be a candidate for Diocesan Pastoral Council.  Of the candidates from the Northwest Deanery, Bishop Peter F. Christensen has appointed Louise Pope, to the Diocesan Pastoral Council for a three (3) year term, effective Sunday, June 1, 2008.  Congratulations to Louise for this recent honor; you make Cathedral proud of your gifts to be shared on a Diocesan level.

LETTER FROM THE WISCONSIN PROVINCE OF THE SOCIETY OF JESUS

April 23, 2008

Dear Fr. Dahlberg and Parishioners,

I have the privilege, on behalf of the Wisconsin Province of the Society of Jesus, to express our gratitude to you for your recent gift of $2,202.00 to help support our global missionary activities, like the work of Fr. John Schak, SJ in Argentina.  We are indebted to you and you can count on a remembrance in our Masses and prayers.  Please pray for us.

This is a particularly beautiful time of the year, especially for us in the Midwest, because it definitively marks the transition from winter to spring to summer.  It is quite natural, I think, to experience a freshness in our outlook on life as we move along to meet the challenges ahead of us with renewed hope and vigor.  On a deeper level, of course, the fact that we recently entered into the mystery of the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ during Holy Week provides a solid basis for our renewed hope and confidence.  We can thank God each day for the ongoing gift of His Holy Spirit.

We, of course, continue to depend on our generous Partners for their ongoing support.  So I am pleased to thank you and pray that the Holy Spirit will grant to you and your Parish families a renewal of your own hopes and aspirations for the future.

Sincerely in Christ,

Rev. Richard A. McGarrity, SJ

President

WEEKLY MEDITATION

MAY 4, 2008

FEAST OF THE ASCENSION

Readings:  Acts 1:1-11; Psalm 47; Ephesians 1:17-23; Matthew 28:16-20

“God mounts his throne to shouts of joy.” (Psalm 47:6)

While the actual feast of the Ascension usually takes place on a Thursday, most dioceses in the United States celebrate its solemnity on the Sunday following that Thursday.  This enables more people to celebrate the liturgy of this feast, and even give it more attention than they would on an ordinary workday. So what does this feast mean to you?

In Matthew’s gospel that we use today there is no ascension.  It ends with the promise that Jesus will be with us always.  Those who were with him at that moment needed to hear those words to give them the strength and the patience to wait for the Spirit to come before they went out to carry out the command of Jesus.  Luke in the Acts of the Apostles tells us that Jesus appeared to his followers for forty days after the Resurrection.  During this time he continued to teach them “about the reign of God”.  They were able during those days to become more comfortable with this new presence of Jesus.

Yet, in the gospel passage we read that some of those who came up to the mountain in Galilee still doubted.  There are various translations for this verse, but each one points to the “little faith” that some of the disciples had.  Their faith would come to full strength only with the descent of the Spirit on Pentecost.

While we honor Jesus on this feast we must also realize that there are implications for us as there were for the disciples.  We can’t sit around and think about the past, or all the “what ifs” that might pop into our minds.  The disciples were told to look to the future when Jesus would return again.  In the meantime they were to “go”, “make disciples of all nations”, “baptize” and “teach”.  They were also to know of Jesus’ continual presence in each of them.

That responsibility has been passed on to us.  It was an awesome task for the early disciples in their world.  It is also just as awesome for us today.  We know that we cannot accomplish this without the presence of Jesus in the Spirit that he has given us.  Do not be afraid to call on the power of that presence in order to be faithful to the command of Jesus.  With his grace, try to make your life show the presence of Jesus to all you meet.

Question for Children:  Jesus helps us be brave when we need to be.  When do you need to be brave?

Question for Youth:  Ascension:  Jesus commanded his disciples to go and make disciples of all people.  How can you help to make disciples of your peers?

Question for Adults:  How do you experience the divine power of Christ-among-us in your daily life?

“Know that I am with you always, until the end of the world.”  (Matthew 28:20)
