WEEKLY MEDITATION
SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER
“If you love me, you will keep my
commandments.” (John 14:15)
In chapters 13-17 of John’s gospel we have
the “Farewell Discourses” of Jesus.
However, some of the material is repeated in the different
chapters. We are currently reading from
chapter 14, but you will find similar ideas in chapter 16. Such a farewell discourse is similar to
speeches made by some other famous people both within the Bible, and outside of
it on the occasion of their deaths, or the presumption that death will follow
soon. One major difference with Jesus’
farewell discourse is that he not only includes a look to the future for his
disciples, but also promises to return again after his departure. This is what gives all of them real hope.
Within this chapter Jesus tells his
followers about the closeness he has with the Father and the Spirit. He also tells them that if they keep his
commandment of love this trinity of persons will not only be with them, but will be in them. The only real commandment that
Jesus gives us is the commandment of love as he loved. If we keep that commandment, he promises that
all three members of the Trinity will be a part of our lives. We will never have to feel alone, or
orphaned.
In the reading from the Acts of the Apostles
we see how one community of love supported the new groups that came into the
Church. We know, too, that this was not
always a perfect situation, but it was strong enough to identify the Christians
of that time. The author of 1 Peter,
writing to the newly baptized, reminds them about how they were to live in the
midst of non-believers. The newly
baptized were to simply tell others about the presence of Christ in their
lives, and how it affected them daily.
This could bring new people into the Church, but it could also bring
persecution. That is why they needed
those words of Jesus in John’s gospel.
Our challenge, of course, in today’s world
is to become convinced of the continued presence of Jesus in our midst. This continued presence gives us the hope for
eternal life. Do we give witness to that
conviction in the way we treat one another at home, or in school, or at work? Pope Benedict spoke of the need for Christian
hope. With whom can we share our hope
today?
Question for Children:
Jesus promises to be our friend forever.
How do friends treat each other?
Question for Youth: Jesus promised us that the Holy Spirit (the
Advocate) would remain with us always.
When have you experienced the Spirit?
Question for Adults: Which one of the promises in today’s Gospel
gives you the most hope?
“And whoever loves me,
will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and reveal myself to him.” (John 14:21)

Many people have said that what drew
them to the Catholic Church was the Eucharist.
As we reflect on the Easter readings about recognizing Jesus in the
Breaking of the Bread, think for a moment whether there is someone you could
invite to Mass and to explore what else the Catholic faith might hold for them.
The RCIA session this Sunday evening
at Holy Assumption parish will focus on the Glorious Mysteries of the
