FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK
We welcome our
children to the Lord’s Table. May they
know Jesus’ love for them; and may they grow in their love for Jesus. Parents, be a good example in your prayer,
your worship, and in your living. Here
are a couple of prayers to use with your children:
PRAYING
WITH CHILDREN (BEFORE MASS)
Loving God,
as we prepare for Mass today,
help us listen to your word,
and join in prayer and song with our
parish community.
Through our celebration,
may we come to love Jesus more deeply. Through the
gift of Christ’s Body
and Blood, make
us grow closer to you and to the
members of our Church.
We pray this in Jesus’ name. Amen.
PRAYING
WITH CHILDREN (AFTER MASS)
God our Father, we thank you
for
making us part
of your holy family. May
the word of God we have heard help us to
live like
Jesus.
May our holy communion strengthen
the love we
have for all our brothers and
sisters in the
world.

parishioners stated that 10% of both the dinner and the 50/50 drawing would go

WEEKLY MEDITATION
FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER
“I am the way, the truth and the
life.” (John 14:6)
Since Easter we have been reading about the
development of early Church. It had to
grow from the seed of the principle of love that Jesus gave it, to the infant
Church spreading the Good News. Very
early a conflict arose between ethnic groups, the Hebrew speaking Jewish
converts and those who spoke Greek. Even
though throughout the Old Testament God emphasized the need to treat the widows
well, and Jesus’ example of treating widows with love, the widows of the Greek
speaking Christians were being ignored and not served. When the Apostles were apprised of this their
solution was to have the people choose some reputable men and appoint them to
do this service. In the Acts of the
Apostles and in some of the Epistles we see other examples of such adaptation
so that the Word of God could spread throughout the then known world.
Jesus did not give us rules and regulations
necessary to spread the message of God’s love.
He left that up to his followers.
They had to be sure they kept the essentials intact while they were free
to adapt some of the other things. Since
that time, we know that the Church has not always been ready to do this. It often imposed some ethnic rules on groups
reached by the early missionaries. By
doing that it created tensions and misunderstandings, some of which still exist
today. This has caused some people to
refuse to follow Jesus, or to leave the Church after being baptized and
confirmed.
Some recent statistics have shown how many
Catholics no longer believe they have to go to church on Sundays. Many others think that they can remain in the
Church without having to share with a believing group of people. I don’t think there is anyone who can
continue to live without some dependence on others. It is hard to imagine how two people can say
they have a loving relationship but never do things together, or ever pause and
say thank you to each other. In the Old
Testament, God warned the people not to make alliances with other nations, but
to depend on God as their ruler. When
they strayed from this they were often defeated and taken into exile. Jesus invites us to follow him as the way,
truth and life. Can we afford to stray from this?
Question for Children: What are some ways that you can act like
Jesus would if he were in your situation?
Question for Youth: Jesus is “the way, the truth, the life” and
he asks us to do as he does. How do you
try to follow Jesus’ way?
Questions for Adults: How are the promises of this Gospel passage
made real in your own life? How do you
experience yourself doing greater works than even Jesus did?
“Whoever has seen me has seen the
Father.” (John 14:9)

CHILD ABUSE PREVENTION
MONTH
It is every
adult’s moral responsibility to protect possible victims by reporting the
suspected abuse or neglect to the responsible authorities. Sexual abuse of minors is a pervasive
societal problem, and only concerted and sustained efforts by all adults in
every segment of society can help to protect children and youth. Suspected abuse should be reported to your
local child protection and/or law enforcement agencies. These groups work together for the welfare of
all children and vulnerable individuals.
