STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE

The disciples on the road to Emmaus walked and talked with Jesus all day long, but it was not until they offered Him hospitality and He blessed and broke the bread that they recognized Him.  Simple acts of loving kindness still reveal the presence of God in our midst.

WEEKLY MEDITATION

Third Sunday of Easter

April 5-6, 2008

I do not know to how many of you I have related the story of my conversion. As many of you may know, I was raised in the Lutheran Church. Growing up, I had always taken quite seriously the quote from the gospel according to Mark where he says, “While they were eating, Jesus took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. And he said, ‘Take this, it is my body.’ Then he took a cup …. And he said, ‘This is my blood, the blood of the Covenant which is to be poured out for many.’ It was not until I was a young adult that a close friend of mine who was Catholic told me that Lutherans did not take these words literally. They did not believe in Transubstantiation. I was shocked and made an appointment with my pastor to clarify this matter and was told that my friend was right.

For some reason, as a child growing up in a Lutheran environment, I always believed in the Eucharist as the body and blood of Christ. My belief in that reality was so strong that I knew from the moment I met with my pastor that I was no longer able to call myself a Lutheran. After a period of searching I found myself at home in the Roman Catholic Church in large part because it was there that I could have satisfied the great yearning that I experienced to receive the body and blood of Christ.

Since that time there have been occasions when I have been disappointed with the Catholic Church. There have been times when I have been angered by the actions of Catholic leaders. There have been times when I have observed great hypocrisy and imperfection among those who like I profess the Catholic faith. There have even been times when I have wondered if I did the right thing in becoming Catholic or if I should not leave the Church. It has been times like that the Eucharist has held me within this Church.

Whenever someone tells me that they have left the church, or that they have stopped going to church, or that they are contemplating leaving the church, I always listen patiently to all of their reasons which are always quite valid. But then, I have to ask them, “What about the Eucharist? How can you contemplate a life separated from that Church where alone is found that Eucharist; the true body and blood of Christ.

In the Gospel reading for this Sunday, Jesus walks all day with two of his disciples following the resurrection. After conversing with him and traveling with him throughout the day, they do not recognize him. It is only at the end of the day when he takes a meal with them, that they recognize him in the breaking of the bread. They recognize him in the Eucharist.

On my life’s journey there have been many times when I perhaps should have recognized Jesus as he traveled with me but failed to do so. However, I have always and will always continue to recognize him in the breaking of the bread each time that I am privileged to celebrate Eucharist.

If we as Catholics really do believe that the Eucharist truly is the body and blood of Christ and that in it He is truly present, then how should we behave when in the presence of the Eucharist? How should we hunger to receive it and to sit in its presence? Do we really recognize Jesus in the breaking of the bread? If not, I think our belief has grown hollow.

Peace and Blessing

Deacon Arthur Gil de Lamadrid

RCIA

Many people have said that what drew them to the Catholic Church was the Eucharist.  As we reflect on the Easter readings about recognizing Jesus in the Breaking of the Bread, think for a moment whether there is someone you could invite to Mass and to explore what else the Catholic faith might hold for them.

The RCIA session this Sunday evening at Holy Assumption parish will focus on the call to ministry and service.  The session begins at 7:00 p.m.

For more information contact the parish office or Dick and Judy Lyons at 1-888-820-8963.

APRIL IS CHILD ABUSE PREVENTION MONTH

To assist church groups, the U.S. bishop’s Secretariat of Child and Youth Protection has developed resources in English and Spanish to facilitate activities to highlight the need for prevention efforts.  They include posters, liturgical guides, articles on church efforts to reach out to abuse victims and to protect children, and bulletin announcements.  Many of the materials are available on a CD to enable church personnel to further distribute them.

The Secretariat of Child and Youth Protection has made care for minors a key priority and spearheaded nationwide safe environment programs through which 5,683,940 minors already have been educated on how to protect themselves from harm and 1,844,681 adults have undergone background screening and training on appropriate relationships with youth in their care.

“We can never rest when it comes to protecting children and teenagers,” said Bishop Gregory Aymond, chair of the bishops’ Committee on the Protection of Children and Young People.  “They are gifts entrusted to us by God and our future is in their hands.  The prevalence of child abuse in our society calls for vigilance of parents, pastors, teachers, indeed, all responsible adults.  Child Abuse Prevention Month deserves our attention in both prayer and action.”
