LETTER FROM WISCONSIN PROVINCE OF THE SOCIETY OF JESUS

March 11, 2008

Dear Fr. Dan and Parishioners,

I am pleased to thank you for your gift of $1,302.00 to help support our global missionary activities, like the work of Fr. John Schak, SJ in Argentina.  We depend so heavily on your kindness and generous spirit and we are proud to call you a Partner with us.

The Church in its wisdom gives us the holy season of Lent each year as a reminder that we are to pray regularly, to do penance or to accept willingly the penance that is imposed upon us, and to reach out to others in love.  Using these as means, we are able to enter more completely into the mysteries of Christ’s life, especially His suffering and death, in order that we may share in the joy of His Resurrection.

So I thank you most sincerely for your most generous support of the Jesuits of the Wisconsin Province.  May God bless you for your kindness and may this holy season of Lent be a time of special grace for you and your parish families.

Sincerely in Christ,

Rev. Richard A. McGarrity, SJ

President

WEEKLY MEDITATION

SOLEMNITY OF EASTER:  MARCH 23, 2008

Luke 24:13-36 Walk to Emmaus

I title my meditation:  ON THE ROAD.  In March, we read and are mesmerized by the Road to the Final Four (basketball) or the Road to the Frozen Four (hockey).  There is much fanfare, much speculation and much betting regarding the outcome.  This past week we celebrated/remembered,/and treasured the Road to Calvary – both a sign of Folly and a sign of Victory.  St. Paul, in writing to Timothy (2 Tim. 4:7-9), tells of his experiences as he nears the end of his Road: “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.  From now on there is reserved for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will give me one on that day, and not only to me but also to all who have longed for his appearance.”

Let us recall the road through Lent and the wonderful stories told.  First, Jesus traveled out to the desert; there hungry and weak, He is tempted and tried; and unlike Adam and Eve, He is obedient to the will of His Father.  Secondly, we see Jesus, Peter, James and John go up Mount Tabor, and there the disciples witness the Transfiguration: a joy they wished to make permanent.  But only the glimpse of glory fades, and Jesus tells them they must go down the mountain and take the road to Jerusalem; and, Jesus reassures them, “do not be afraid.”  Thirdly, Jesus, on the road, meets the Samaritan woman; and Jesus asks for water.  The Samaritan woman has a life changing experience – in her thirst, Jesus gives her water welling-up unto eternal life.  She becomes a major Evangelizer.  Fourthly, Jesus, on the road again, meets the man born blind.  The man born blind receives mud on his eyes and with water washes, by Jesus’ command, away his blindness; he not only receives his physical sight but also spiritual sight of Faith as others remained “blind” in heart and in spirit.  Fifth and last, we see Jesus on the road to console Martha and Mary on the death of their brother, Lazarus – when Jesus heard this he said, “this illness is not to end in death, but is for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified through it.”  So Martha says in response to Jesus’ declaration: “I am the resurrection and the life,” “Yes, Lord I have come to believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God.”  So at Jesus’ command, Lazarus comes forth from the tomb; Jesus says, “untie him and let him go.”  The Sacred Triduum has taken us on the road; to an Upper Room where a Last Supper is celebrated; to a Garden of Gethsemane where Jesus anguishes over the trial that is ahead, while the apostles sleep and are not ready for the test – a time of betrayal, of weakness, of flight; to a courtyard where Jesus is tried, scourged and mocked and taken away to be crucified; to the road to Calvary, where Jesus embraces the Cross, becoming obedient unto death, death on a Cross; on this road, Jesus meets His Mother, Mary, who readily embraces the cross with both hands; on the road he meets the solicitous Veronica, the helper Simon of Cyrene, the weeping women of Jerusalem; and, lastly He meets his mockers and crucifiers.  At the end of the road, with a whisper Jesus says, “Father, into your hands, I commend my spirit; it is finished.”

The next road would be to the burial site of Joseph of Arimathia.  To this site, the early Sunday morn, the women came on the road to anoint the body of Jesus; only to find the stone rolled away, the burial wrappings on the ground, and an Angel visitor who says, “Why do you look for the Living One among the dead?  He is not here, He is Risen as He promised.”  And so, Jesus is on the road again!  The Stranger who accompanies the two distraught disciples on the road to Emmaus and unfolds the secrets of the Scripture to them; and when invited to supper with them; the Stranger takes the bread, blesses it – and the disciples’ eyes were opened, and they recognized him in the breaking of Bread.  And in their sheer joy, they run all the way back to Jerusalem with the Good News:  the Jesus Crucified is Jesus Risen!  The Risen Jesus continues to travel – to meet the disciples on the seashore, to meet doubting Thomas in the upper room, and to meet Mary Magdalene in the garden.

“On the road” Jesus has many experiences: healing, comforting, forgiving, inspiring, challenging, always inviting – Come, learn from me!  Come, follow me!  Always, Jesus is reminding us, “Do not be afraid, I am with you” – “On the Road” – as He tells Thomas: “I am the Way, the Truth and the Life; no one comes to the Father except through me.”  As the poet Robert Frost said, “Two roads diverged in a Woods; I took the one less traveled, and that has made all the difference.”  As Willie Nelson sings, “I’m on the Road again” – that is Jesus’ theme song too.  I say, Happy Travels to all!!  Be not afraid!  Alleluia!

Fr. Dan

Question for Children: When have you seen someone do a good deed for someone else?

Question for Youth: Jesus’ closest friends had trouble believing that the tomb was empty.  Resurrection is surprising.  What does Jesus’ resurrection mean in your life?

Question for Adults: Name one way or time when you experience the presence of the Risen Christ?  Is it at meals?  With those whom you love?  At other times?
