STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE

When Jesus heard about the illness of His friend, Lazarus, He responded, “This illness is not to end in death; rather it is for God’s glory, that through it the Son of God may be glorified.”  Every aspect of our lives – our gifts as well as our sufferings – can, if surrendered to Christ, lead to blessing for ourselves and others.

THOUGHTS ABOUT DATES FOR EASTER

Easter this year is Sunday, March 23, 2008.  As you may know Easter is always the 1st Sunday after the 1st full moon after the Spring Equinox (which is March 20).

This dating of Easter is based on the lunar calendar that Hebrew people used to identify Passover which is why it moves around on our Roman calendar.

Another couple of things you might be interested in:

Based on the above Easter can actually be one day earlier (March 22) but that is pretty rare.  This year is the earliest Easter any of us will ever see the rest of our lives!  And only the most elderly of our population have ever seen it this early (95 years old or above!).  And none of us have ever or will ever see it a day earlier!  Here are the facts:

The next time Easter will be this early (March 23) will be the year 2228 (220 years from now).  The last time it was this early was 1913 (so if you’re 95 or older you are the only ones that were around for that!).  The next time it will be a day earlier March 22 will be in the year 2285 (277 years from now).  The last time it was on March 22 was 1818.  So no one alive today has or will ever see it any earlier than this year!

PRIESTS’ ASSEMBLY AND CHRISM MASS

This coming week – beginning Sunday evening, the priests of our Diocese will gather for Vespers/Evening Prayer with Bishop Christensen followed by a Social in Kress Hall.  On Monday, we have a Day Retreat (at St. Francis); we also have a Reconciliation Service and Banquet on Monday evening.  Of course, Tuesday we have with Bishop, and the entire Diocese the Chrism Mass – the Blessings of Oils:  Oil of Catechumens, Oil of the Sick, and Sacred Chrism.  Please pray for your priests and Bishop, pray for Vocations, Pray for a New Spring time!

LETTER FROM FR. SCHAK

February 26, 2008

Dear Fr. Dan and parish community,

I’m back in action but on a very limited scale for a while yet.  One of the most pressing catch ups of the things I neglected during the past several months is to acknowledge and thank the parish for the generous donations in 2007.

I won’t attempt a resume of the day care activities now but we have begun a new project.  We bought a couple old grinders to mill spices and also a generous supply of a variety of spices.  We put the spices in small cellophane bags which 3 people go from house to house to sell.  There is no way we could compete with the modern milling companies but between the miller, the packager and the sellers it gives 5 people a part time job, not enough to support a family nor recover the cost of the machines but a big help.  We hope that this will inspire job making creativity among other day care “graduates”.

In the Sacred Heart,

Fr. John Schak

FAITH ENRICHMENT THURSDAY EVENING

OUR THEME:  WHAT IS CATHOLIC EVANGELIZATION?

STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE

We need your HELP financially each week.  Our Church and School utility bill (gas, water, electricity) for mid-December to mid-January was $13,900.  I expect that our utility bill for mid-January through mid-February will be about the same.  The bill came in Saturday, Feb. 23 and its cost was $13,400.  In addition, the City hit us with a six month bill of nearly $2,000 for storm water utility.  Again, I ask for your understanding and generosity in meeting our obligation.  Pray also for a warm Spring!

  God bless,

    Fr. Dan

WEEKLY MEDITATION

MARCH 9, 2008

FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT

Readings:  Ezekiel 37:12-14; Psalm 130; Romans 8:8-11; John 11:1-45

“Untie him and let him go.”  (John 11:44)

Some years ago a friend of mine walked from Kansas City, Kansas to Guatemala City, Guatemala.  His purpose in doing so was to highlight the condition of the poor.  As he walked, he would sing and play his guitar.  However, in order for him to be able to do this, he had to be set free of all of his responsibilities in the organization he had founded.  So they talked about Bob being “unplugged” from his desk and set free to do this walk.

In the Gospel for today we hear about a lot of hesitancy to reach out and help to “unplug” Lazarus.  Jesus, on the other hand, does not hesitate to give new life back to Lazarus with a simple command.  However, when Lazarus comes from the tomb with his new life he is still bound up.  Jesus tells the people to “untie him and let him go.”  Someone asked, after reading this passage, why Jesus did not unbind him.  I think that Jesus wanted other people to take part in helping Lazarus to live his new life free of past obstacles.  I am sure that Lazarus, Mary and Martha, and the others who witnessed this scene, had to rethink their lives.  They were all being offered the freedom to live their new lives in a new way.  To do so, however, they would have to help each other, just as those around Jesus had to help him and Lazarus with that new life.

As we walk with the people who are in the RCIA program this Lent in our parish, we are reminded about their struggles and ours in trying to live the new life in Jesus.  We have been praying that they will get this new life.  Will we continue to pray and act to help them after Easter in the period when they try out their new and unbound legs with Christ?

In our Generations of Faith program we will soon be studying another phrase in the Creed:  “We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church”.  I think we should really reflect about that word “apostolic”.  It means that we have to become unbound from our fears and move out to bring our faith to others.  We need to help set them free of their bindings of fear, prejudice, anxiety, and other negative issues that have influenced them in the past.  We can’t just bring people to the door of the tomb with new life, and then let them stand there.  As Catholic Christians we believe that, as St. Paul says in the second reading, we have the Spirit of Christ living in us.  The people we meet each day need to see that Spirit at work in us so that they can be set free.

Question for Children:  How do your actions show that you put your faith and trust in Jesus?

Question for Youth:  Lazarus received a second chance at life through Jesus.  How have you experienced second chances in your own life?

Questions for Adults:  The death from which we are called is healing from those things which bind us and hold us back:  memories, fears, rejection, or other such things.  What binds you?  What keeps you from fully being your own most true self in Christ?

“I am the resurrection and the life, says the Lord; whoever believes in me will never die.”  (John 11:25,26)

Fr. Lee

RCIA

RCIA for the City of Superior

Many people have said that what drew them to the Catholic Church was the Eucharist.  As we reflect on recognizing Jesus in the Breaking of the Bread, think for a moment whether there is someone you could invite to

Mass and to explore what else the Catholic faith might hold for them.

This week's RCIA session will focus on the Lord's Prayer and Eucharist.  The session will be held on Sunday,   March 9th at Holy Assumption Parish beginning at         7:00 p.m.  For more information contact the parish office or call Dick and Judy Lyons, the city RCIA coordinators, at 888-820-8963.
