            STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE

The blind man was willing to let Jesus minister to him and  willingly did all Jesus asked of him.  The Pharisees were more resistant to His message, spending their time and energy to disprove the miracle.  Which am I more like, the man born blind or the Pharisees?

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

OUR HOLY FATHER’S MONTHLY INTENTIONS 2008

Forgiveness.  That all may understand the importance of forgiveness and reconciliation between individuals and peoples and that the Church may spread Christ’s love.

The Persecuted.  That Christians who are persecuted because of the Gospel may be sustained by the Holy Spirit and continue to bear witness to the Word of God.

From Fr. Dan’s Homily Last Sunday (2/24)

“The paradox of our time in history is that we have taller buildings but shorter tempers, wider Freeways, but narrower viewpoints.  We spend more, but have less, we buy more, but enjoy less.  We have bigger houses and smaller families, more conveniences, but less time.  We have more degrees but less sense, more knowledge, but less judgment, more experts, yet more problems, more medicine, but less wellness.

We drink too much, smoke too much, spend too recklessly, laugh too little, drive too fast, get too angry, stay up too late, get up too tired, read too little, watch TV too much, and pray too seldom.

We have multiplied our possessions, but reduced our values.  We talk too much, love too seldom, and hate too often.

We’ve learned how to make a living, but not a life.  We’ve added years to life not life to years.  We’ve been all the way to the moon and back, but have trouble crossing the street to meet a new neighbor.  We conquered outer space but not inner space.  We’ve done larger things, but not better things.

We’ve cleaned up the air, but polluted the soul.  We’ve conquered the atom, but not our prejudice.  We write more, but learn less.  We plan more, but accomplish less.  We’ve learned to rush, but not to wait.  We build more computers to hold more information, to produce more copies than ever, but we communicate less and less.

These are the times of fast foods and slow digestion, big men and small character, steep profits and shallow relationships.  These are the days of two incomes but more divorce, fancier houses, but broken homes.  These are days of quick trips, disposable diapers, throwaway morality, one night stands, overweight bodies, and pills that do everything from cheer, to quiet, to kill.  It is a time when there is much in the showroom window and nothing in the stockroom.  A time when technology can bring this letter to you, and a time when you can choose either to share this insight, or to just hit delete…

AND ALWAYS REMEMBER:

Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.”

STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE

We need your HELP financially each week.  Our Church and School utility bill (gas, water, electricity) for mid-December to mid-January was $13,900.  I expect that our utility bill for mid-January through mid-February will be about the same.  The bill came in Saturday, Feb. 23 and its cost was $13,400.  In addition, the City hit us with a six month bill of nearly $2,000 for storm water utility.  Again, I ask for your understanding and generosity in meeting our obligation.  Pray also for a warm Spring!

  God bless,

    Fr. Dan

WEEKLY MEDITATION

MARCH 2, 2008

4TH SUNDAY OF LENT

Readings:  1 Samuel 16:1B,6-7,10-13A; Psalm 23; Ephesians 5:8-14; John 9:1-41

“I am the light of the world.”  (John 8:12)

To better understand the story in John’s Gospel we have to remember that in the year 70 A.D. the Romans destroyed Jerusalem and the Temple.  Prior to this invasion the early Christian converts from Judaism would begin their Sabbath worship in the synagogue or Temple and then complete it with the celebration of the Eucharist in someone’s home.  However, after the destruction by the Romans the early Christians had broken off on their own.  As the Jewish leaders began to reconstruct their religious rules and regulations they excommunicated the converts from Judaism to Christianity and even put a curse on them in their official blessings.  St. John’s Gospel shows us some of the friction that existed at that time between the two groups.

In the story of the man born blind and healed by Jesus, the tension between the Jewish leaders and the Christians is clear.  There are many symbolic references in this story.  Jesus first of all corrects a misunderstanding about the relationship of sin and physical or mental disabilities.  The contrast of night and day and blindness and sight are symbols that the Gospel uses throughout.  Look back to the first chapter of John where we see a struggle between those who accepted the Light and those that did not.  Then in chapter 13 as Judas leaves the supper room the author notes “And it was night.”  (John 13:30)

The events of chapter nine take place after two chapters placing Jesus in Jerusalem for the Feast of Tabernacles.  This feast contains symbols of booths, water, and light.  During this visit Jesus comes into confrontation with the leaders.  Jesus speaks of himself as giving rivers of living water (chapter 7:38) and being the light of the world (8:12).  When the leaders try to stone him, refusing to “see” him as he really is, Jesus leaves the Temple area, and chapter 9 begins with the story of the man born without being able to see.  In the story Jesus uses water to bring about the cure.  He also contrasts the man’s blindness with the Pharisee’s unwillingness to see.

Surely this is another good story for those who have entered the RCIA program and are moving toward their baptism.  These men and women want to see better than they have before.  They are open to the healing touch of Jesus through the waters of Baptism.  Let us continue to accompany them with our Lenten practices as we prepare to ask Jesus to accept our own willingness to see better as we renew our baptismal vows.

Question for Children:  What are the things that Jesus wants you to do as his friend?

Question for Youth:  Jesus helped a blind man see – and he helps each of us see the world differently.  How do you see differently because you believe?

Question for Adults:  Share how you, as a child of the light, in the power of Christ, produce goodness, justice, and truth for the world.  What specific actions do you take to do this?

“Whoever follows me will have the light of life.”             (John 8:12)

RCIA

What does Lent have to do with those becoming Catholic?

In Lent, RCIA participants move into the final period of preparation for the sacraments. They have been nourished by the graces of various liturgical Rites throughout the process, which have helped them to embrace God's call. In Lent, God pours purifying and enlightening graces

upon them, through the spiritual preparation they receive in RCIA sessions, the special Rites that mark the Sundays of Lent, and the prayers offered for them by the faithful.

A tour of St. Francis Xavier church will be the highlight of this week's session. The session will be held on Sunday, March 2 at St. Francis Xavier Parish beginning at          7:00 p.m. For more information contact the parish office or call Dick and Judy Lyons, the city RCIA coordinators,

at 888-820-8963.
