FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK
LETTER FROM FR. JOHN
SCHAK, SJ
Dear Fr. Dan,
I have been going down hill for the last several months. I don’t know exactly when I began to notice it, but sometime after Holy Week last year. Sort of a chronic lack of energy unable to keep up with all the pastoral chores that I seemed to think nobody else could do. Pride cometh before the fall. One always thought that tomorrow would be better. It wasn´t. July and August I was just barely dragging myself to fulfill some of the minimal pastoral attention but determined to do it. That was the downfall.
The days off didn’t restore strength. It was evident that it would take a couple weeks. So looking at the calendar, I set a date. September, November and December are very busy months here and I had two one week retreats scheduled for January 7 to 22. I figured I could drag myself to the finish line. On the 23rd I would get a thorough medical checkup and go into hibernation if necessary. It didn´t quite turn out that way.
Forcing me to keep going when I should have
known better was brewing up a big storm. I survived September, November,
December and almost the two retreats. I had a marvellous
group of laypeople to help direct the retreats. They pulled it off.
The last two days of the second retreat, I was limited to celebrate
The results were so bad that he consulted with a couple specialists and they said I should go into intensive care NOW. I was there 7 days then sent to a room. A day later the doctor said things seemed to be under control. He said I could go back to the parish for convalescence under certain conditions. The basic conditions were that we set up an oxygen supply at the house, follow a strict diet, continue repose and have someone come daily to control the progress and DON´T have relapse. Come back here for a checkup in 7 days, unless something goes haywire. In that case, come in quick. So here I am participating in Lent. Following the example you set a couple years ago recovering from your operation. I did not preside any of the Ash Wednesday services though I participated passively at one of the Masses.
Having forced me off the playing field,
the Lord had a chance to show me how I was playing, and to show me what’s
important and what is really important. During most of the year, being
determined to attend the minimum essentials of pastoral ministry, I
had wasted the little energy I had. Alas, many details were not that
essential and I couldn’t keep up with them anyway. I was so tensed up
trying to do what I couldn’t that it kept me from doing important things I
could have done like writing notes to

THE ROSE ENSEMBLE
The Rose Ensemble Candlelight
Concert – The Secret Society of Notre Dame De Paris.
Scandal, satire, pilgrimage and politics: Enter Paris at a time when monks were
scholars, fierce social commentators and composers of a dramatically different
kind of music. From the scholars’
quarter of Notre Dame came the rhythmically complex, organic harmonies of a new
style said to be directly influenced by the syncopated hammering of
construction on the Cathedral of Notre Dame.
In this ethereal concert by candlelight, The Rose Ensemble captures the
medieval world of the great cathedral.
The concert will be held on Friday,

WEEKLY MEDITATION
2ND SUNDAY OF LENT
Gospel: Matt. 17:1-9
“A voice from the cloud said, ‘This is my
beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased, listen to him.’” Jesus in his public ministry says to his
disciples: “Come, learn from me; come,
follow in my footsteps… live on in my love.”
The season of Lent is about change:
metanoia/conversion
of heart. The prophet Joel said, “Come back to the Lord
with your whole heart.” Fr. Wilfred Theisen,
OSB, says in his commentary: “The change
Jesus is constantly advocating is a change
in our identity. In a way we can say
Jesus is guilty of identity theft, since that is what his intention
is. Jesus wants to steal our
identity.” In a way,
Fr. Theisen asks,
“What identity does Jesus want to give us?
First of all, we are to identify ourselves as children of Abraham…
Abraham’s faith set him apart from his countrymen. Our faith must set us apart from a secular
society whose final destiny is expressed often in: the godlessness, consumerism,
addictions, greed, self-centeredness, etc.”
Secondly, another part of our identity is that we are gospel people – as
How do we develop as children of Abraham and as a gospel
people? Through our Lenten
discipline of prayer, fasting, and works of charity, we keep our eyes fixed on Jesus. Putting Jesus first in our daily life will
bring about radical change – in the
heart, mind, and soul. We gradually
assume, by God’s grace, the likeness (identity) of Christ. The cross
of ashes marked us (first and foremost at our Baptism) as disciples of
Christ-followers of the Way. Do we bear
that cross devotedly, faithfully, religiously in our daily living – in our
thoughts, words, and deeds?
Here is how I see ourselves as
Christ-like: when I see a family
lovingly and caringly minister to their father dying with cancer; when I see family
daily ministering to their loved one in hospice – literally praying and
preparing the sick one for their journey to eternal life; when I see our parish
visitors take Communion to the shut-ins, visiting and assisting others in their
needs; when I see the Cathedral school children and our parish teens make
cards, gifts, and goodies for our seniors, the shut-ins and nursing homes; when
I see parishioners invite a fellow parishioner to join their families for
Christmas/Easter etc.; when I see our generosity to Fr. Schak and our Jesuit
Partnership in Argentina etc.
We fulfill Mother Teresa’s exhortation “to do something beautiful for God each
day” – it is best done when we act Christ-like. Remember Jesus is guilty of identity theft –
He comes to dwell in me and you!

Question for Children: Share about a time when you felt especially close to God or
Jesus.
Question for Youth: Have you ever had a “mountain top” experience where you felt
exceptionally close to God? How was your
life changed by that experience?
Question for Adults: Perhaps this reading calls us, not to cling, to the
familiar, but to leave the comforts of the parish and reach out to the world
around us. In your neighborhood or
community, who is waiting to hear the Good News?
