FAITH ENRICHMENT THURSDAY EVENING

--Lenten Prayer, Supper, Talk Series--

When: Thursday’s during Lent- February 7 – March 13  5:30 PM – rotates weekly between Stations / Taize Prayer / Mass.  6:00 PM – Soup & Bread.  6:30 PM Talk. (Conversation/Dialogue with Pastors)

OUR THEME:  WHAT IS CATHOLIC EVANGELIZATION?

Jesus told his followers to “go and make disciples of all nations” (Matthew 28:19).  We will study and discuss what this means today.  A recent document from the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith challenged Catholics to be evangelizers.  In 1992 the Bishops of the United States presented a plan and strategy for evangelization.  We will use that doctrine as the basis for our study and discussion.  As usual we will begin with either the Stations of the Cross, Taize Prayer or Mass, followed by soup and bread.  The study presentation will follow the meal.  All are invited to attend and share in the discussion.

LETTER FROM WISCONSIN PROVINCE OF THE SOCIETY OF JESUS

January 30, 2008

Dear Fr. Dahlberg and Parishioners,

It gives me great satisfaction to thank you on behalf of the Wisconsin Province Jesuits for your gift of $1,935.00 to help support our global missionary activities, like the work of Fr. John Schak, SJ in Salta, Argentina.  You will be remembered in our Masses and prayers.

The beginning of a new year has the potential to bring with it a sense of a new beginning with renewed hopes and aspirations.  For many of us personally it is a good time to make or renew resolutions to improve the way we go about our daily lives.  We can call upon the abiding presence of the Holy Spirit to renew us and to help us keep our resolutions.

May God bless you, your families and all the members of the Society of Jesus as we move with confidence and hope into this New Year of Our Lord 2008.  Thanks so much for your thoughtfulness.

Sincerely in Christ,

Rev. Richard A. McGarrity, SJ

President

THE ROSE ENSEMBLE

The Rose Ensemble Candlelight Concert – The Secret Society of Notre Dame De Paris.  Scandal, satire, pilgrimage and politics:  Enter Paris at a time when monks were scholars, fierce social commentators and composers of a dramatically different kind of music.  From the scholars’ quarter of Notre Dame came the rhythmically complex, organic harmonies of a new style said to be directly influenced by the syncopated hammering of construction on the Cathedral of Notre Dame.  In this ethereal concert by candlelight, The Rose Ensemble captures the medieval world of the great cathedral.  The concert will be held on Friday, February 29th at 7:30 PM here at Cathedral of Christ the King.  (Pre-concert presentation at 6:30 PM)  Tickets:  $23 ($15 seniors)

Buy 2 or more tickets, and receive an extra ticket free!

WEEKLY MEDITATION

FEBRUARY 10, 2008

FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT

Readings:  Genesis 2:7-9; 3:1-7; Psalm 51; Romans 5:12-19; Mark 4:1-11

“Be merciful, O Lord, for we have sinned.” (See Psalm 51: 3-6)

The Gospel for today tells us “Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert…”.  Other Gospel writers speak of him as being led by the Spirit to the Jordan to be baptized, and led from the desert to begin his public life.  Jesus is pictured as someone who was open to the Spirit of God to be led in the ways of God.  We also see this in Mary who was overshadowed by the Holy Spirit and gave herself totally to God.

How willing are we to be “led by the Spirit”?  As we enter the season of Lent we need to review our lives and see how the Spirit has tried to guide us and how we have responded.  On Ash Wednesday I used the three words of “Review”, “Renew”, and “Redo”.  Let me comment further on these three words.

In order to follow the invitation to Jesus we have to first of all “repent”.  This word means that we have to recognize that we are going in the wrong direction; stop; turn around; and move in a new direction, the one designated by the Spirit.  On Ash Wednesday we said, as we gave you the ashes, “Turn away from sin and be faithful to the gospel.”  Looking back and “reviewing” your past year what would you say was your worst “sin”?

The season of Lent was originally intended as a period of time for the catechumens to prepare for their baptism at the Easter Vigil.  Later, all Christians decided to accompany the catechumens in prayer, fasting and almsgiving.  We, too, look ahead to our renewal of the baptismal vows.  So during this season of Lent, look at the wording of those vows and try to make them a living part of your life.  Then at the Easter Vigil, or on Easter Sunday you can truly “renew” those vows with other parishioners.

Finally, “redo” your way of life according to the reflections you have made during Lent, and according to your renewal of vows.  Maybe you will change only one thing in your daily life, but it could be something big that will lead to more change.  Remember, the Spirit is the one who is leading you.  Trust the Spirit!

Question for Children:  What do you plan to do during Lent this year as a way of showing you want to grow closer to Jesus?

Questions for Youth:  Jesus was tempted by the devil.  How are you tempted?  What helps you resist these temptations?

Questions for Adults:  When you yourself pause to be alone with God, what distracts and prevents you from dwelling in that?  Busyness?  The demands of life?  TV?  The internet?

“The Lord will overshadow you, and you will find refuge under his wings.”    (See Psalm 91:4)

Fr. Lee

GENERATIONS OF FAITH

We were thrilled with the participation of over 250 members of our parish family at our festival this past week.

We wish to thank all of the many volunteers who continue to share their special talents and time in making each festival meaningful for all ages.  We particularly wish to thank our confirmation students, youth, and adults who portrayed Jesus and his disciples and the other characters in our Passion play.  You are each a special gift to our parish!
