LENTEN SEASON – FAST AND ABSTINENCE

REGULATIONS

1.  Everyone 14 years of age or over is bound to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays of Lent and Good Friday.

2.  Everyone 18 years of age and under 60 years of age is bound to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.

3.  On Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, only one full meatless meal is allowed.  Two other meatless meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one’s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal.  Eating between meals is not permitted.  When health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige.

4.  Catholics should not lightly excuse themselves from these prescribed minimal penitential practices.

OPERATION RICE BOWL BEGINS ON ASH WEDNESDAY

Our faith community will participate in Catholic Relief Services’ Lenten program, Operation Rice Bowl, as a part of our Lenten observance.  Throughout Lent, Operation Rice Bowl will help us pray, fast, learn, and give in solidarity with those in need around the world.   We encourage you to be a part of this Lenten journey at home with your family and loved ones.

FAITH ENRICHMENT THURSDAY EVENING

--Lenten Prayer, Supper, Talk Series--

When: Thursday’s during Lent- February 7 – March 13  5:30 PM – rotates weekly between Stations / Taize Prayer / Mass.  6:00 PM – Soup & Bread.  6:30 PM Talk. (Conversation/Dialogue with Pastors)

OUR THEME:  WHAT IS CATHOLIC EVANGELIZATION?

Jesus told his followers to “go and make disciples of all nations” (Matthew 28:19).  We will study and discuss what this means today.  A recent document from the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith challenged Catholics to be evangelizers.  In 1992 the Bishops of the United States presented a plan and strategy for evangelization.  We will use that doctrine as the basis for our study and discussion.  As usual we will begin with either the Stations of the Cross, Taize Prayer or Mass, followed by soup and bread.  The study presentation will follow the meal.  All are invited to attend and share in the discussion.

NATIONAL BLACK AND INDIAN MISSIONS COLLECTION – FEBRUARY 9th & 10th, 2008

The annual National Black and Indian Mission Collection was authorized by the Catholic Church in 1884 and has served the Black and American Indian communities ever since – with never a year of interruption.  The proceeds from the Black and Indian Mission Collection have been distributed as grants to dioceses supporting and strengthening evangelization programs, which would otherwise be in danger of disappearing among the Black, American Indian, Eskimo, and Aleute communities of the United States.  This past year the diocese received a grant for $56,000.                                                                            (There will be a second collection taken at all Masses next weekend, February 9th & 10th.)

WEEKLY MEDITATION

Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time

February 2-3, 2008

We are told that by virtue of our baptism we are all children of God. It is an honor and a privilege that we do not deserve and for which most of us did not ask (since most of us were baptized at such a young age that we could neither chose baptism nor, moreover, understand what is entailed in being a child of God). Probably most of us have grown in our understanding of what is asked of us to live as a child of God, much as we learn as we grow up what it means to be a member of a family, a community, or a church.

In the light of this Sunday’s gospel reading, I cannot help but think that most of us have somehow missed the mark. In the reading, Jesus gives a list of beatitudes which are all beautiful and inspiring and which promise great rewards. But the one that has always stood out to me ever since hearing this reading as a small child is “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God.” There it is in black and white: a clear description of what is needed to be a child of God. We need to be peacemakers. As I read this reading for what must be the millionth time, I have to ask myself, “How are we doing?” “How am I doing?” I look at the world around me, I look at this city, I look at my own home and wonder, “If we are all peacemakers, where is all this peace that we have been making?”

This past week I heard a radio interview of Eric Bogle who is an Irish, Australian song writer and singer. He told of how he once visited a military cemetery in France where there are buried British casualties of World War I . He recalled sitting beside a grave of an eighteen year old boy, seeing the white crosses stretch on to the horizon, and being so moved that he wrote a poem which became what is probably his best known song, The Green Fields of France. In the last verse of the poem, Bogle mentions that Willie McBride (the one who the poem portrays) fought and gave his life for a cause. The cause was peace. Willie McBride, like his comrades believed that they were fighting to bring an end to war forever. In the radio interview this week, Bogle says that in spite of the nobility of their cause and in spite of their great sacrifice for it, they have been betrayed. They have been betrayed by subsequent generations. They have been betrayed by us when we have failed to make the peace, to keep the peace.

Generation after generation, men and women have found reason to go to war and all of the reasons are good and noble and often the cause is just and the war is needed. But, I believe that it is really peace that is needed and that we need to learn to recognize that it is more noble than any war.

In the midst our many heroes of wars past, we raise up Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Mother Theresa, and Jesus himself and admire what they accomplished through peaceful means. Yet, over and over again, we go to battle to solve our problems not only on a national level, but even on a domestic level within our own homes. We fail to realize that war will never end war and war will never bring peace.

We will only be able to fully understand the beatitudes when we realize that they are not merely pious platitudes but are a blueprint to living which challenge us in the very deepest parts of our human nature. When we allow them to work within our souls and when we really want peace, it will blossom.

Jesus says, “Blessed are the peacemakers.” Let’s go and make some peace. Then we will truly be sons and daughters of God.

Peace and Blessing,

Deacon Arthur Gil de Lamadrid

Question for Children: Choose one of the Beatitudes and share how you will make it part of your life.

Question for Youth: Jesus gives us a plan for our happiness in the beatitudes. Do the things that make you happiest also lead you towards God? Do they follow God’s plan?

Question for Adults: How do you describe what it means to be "blest" in your own life?

RCIA

RCIA for the City of Superior

What is the RCIA Rite of Election?

The Rite of Election (February 10) is a key moment for those seeking Baptism into the Catholic faith. At the Rite of Election, godparents, representing the parish, testify to the bishop, regarding the catechumens' readiness to become members of the Church. Once catechumens participate in the Rite of Election they are called "the elect" because

they have been called (elected) by the bishop, their shepherd, to the final preparation for the sacraments of initiation at the Easter vigil.

No RCIA session will be held this week. For more information about the RCIA process contact our parish or call Dick and Judy Lyons, the city RCIA coordinators, at 888-820-8963.
