WEEKLY MEDITATION
3RD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY
TIME
“The Lord is my light and my salvation.”
(Psalm 27:1)
When people are suffering from one set back
after another we often tell them that there is light at the end of the tunnel;
follow that light! Murphy, of the
infamous Murphy’s Law, tell us that we should be
careful because that light might be a train.
Matthew starts his story of the public life
of Jesus by giving us a quotation from Isaiah (part of which is heard in the
first reading). In that quotation the
people, who were in great fear of being overcome by a powerful political
neighbor, were given a ray of hope: “the
people who sit in
darkness have seen a great light.” Jesus uses that same symbol of light when he
tells us that he is “the light of the world.
Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of
life.” (John 8:12). I wonder if the
first apostles thought of that when they left everything and followed Jesus.
We see this image of light in the Christmas
story: the shepherds saw the Angels
surrounded by a great light, and the Magi follow the light of a star. At the Transfiguration Jesus was bathed in a
great light. All of these lights seem to
have given someone great hope for something better than what they had. Following those lights, however, meant taking
some kind of a risk.
Today, things do not always look very
bright, and the future often seems a bit cloudy if not dark. So where do you find your light? Does Jesus come into your life at times as some
kind of a light? Were you able to take a
risk and follow that light? What were
you hoping for from that light? Who has
been the light of Christ for you? Jesus
calls you to follow him as he called his early apostles. When he does this, and you accept the
challenge, your life will never be the same as it was before you heard the
call.
Question for Children: How do you hear Jesus calling you to do what
he wants you to do?
Questions for Youth: Jesus has already called you to be his
disciple. What are some things that you
are already doing because you are a disciple of Jesus? What more can you do?
Questions for Adults: How does Jesus call you to assist in his
ministry: the building up of his Reign
of God? How do you know what God wants
of you in this regard?
“Look to God that you may be radiant with joy and your faces may not
blush for shame.” (Psalm 34:6)

What is the RCIA Rite of Election?
The Rite of Election is a key moment
for those seeking Baptism into the Catholic faith. At the Rite of Election,
godparents, representing the parish, testify to the bishop, regarding the
catechumens' readiness to become members of the Church. Once catechumens
participate in the Rite of Election they are called "the elect"
because they have been called (elected) by the bishop, their shepherd, to the
final preparation for the sacraments of initiation at the Easter vigil.
This week's RCIA session, Sunday,
January 27, will meet at Holy Assumption to discuss God's Desire for Healing.
For more information contact the parish office. For more information contact
our parish or call Dick and Judy Lyons, the city RCIA coordinators, at 888
