STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE
Our Baptism like the Lord’s, is a consecration to service. The bishops’ pastoral on stewardship reminds
us that “… there is a fundamental obligation arising from the sacrament of
baptism that people place their gifts, their resources – their selves – at
God’s service in and through the Church.”

THANKS
The Parish was richly blessed with the offerings for
Christmas and End-of-the-Year contributions.
Because of your generosity we were able to pay our annual liability and
property insurance which amounted to nearly $19,000. Also, we caught up on other necessary repairs
and maintenance items. We are also
grateful for your Flower Memorials for Christmas which added to the beauty of
the Cathedral in the Christmas Season.
May your generous Stewardship of Treasure continue throughout the New
Year of 2008.
January through June are heavy with
expenses. “Give as the Lord has given to
you.”
FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK
WEEK OF PRAYER FOR CHRISTIAN UNITY
With Vatican Council II’s Decree on Ecumenism in 1964 that called “prayer” the “soul of the
ecumenical movement,” the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity coalesced into a
world wide observance that would focus on the shared experience of all
Christians rather than on their differences.
This year theme and text is, “That they all be one…that the world may
believe.” (John 17:21)
This year on January 19/20 Pastor Bill Wilson, of
As Fr. James Loughran said recently, “the
reality is this: For Christians the call to prayer supersedes division. Prayer
is worship of God, not of position papers.
Prayer often gets us to cool down and helps us to remember that our theological
adversary is still, above all, a brother or sister in Christ. That’s the beginning of a conversion of
heart. Our passion for the truth of our
convictions is tempered by the commandment to love one another. This love is most directly symbolized in praying
together. That’s what the Week of Prayer
for Christian Unity is all about!” For
human beings this is impossible, but for God “all things are possible.” (Matt. 19:23-26)

NATIONAL VOCATION AWARENESS WEEK
The Feast of the Baptism of the Lord marks Jesus’ initiation into public
ministry. At his baptism Jesus is named
the Beloved Son of God. With this
celebration we recommit ourselves to follow in the footsteps of Jesus. Initiated through our baptism we too are the Beloved of God, commissioned to proclaim
Good News with our lives.
The observance of National
Vocation Awareness Week (NVAW) began in 1976 when the National Conference
of Catholic Bishops designated the 28th Sunday of the year as the
beginning of NVAW. In 1997 this celebration was moved to
coincide with the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord.
National Coalition for Church Vocations promotes all Catholic Church
vocations (priesthood, religious life, diaconate, lay ministry). By fostering a culture of vocations, the
Church is strengthened in its universal call to holiness.
PRAYER FOR VOCATIONS
God of Love,
You call us to live in your love
through the grace of our baptism.
Bless us with the courage
to carry out the mission of Jesus.
Grant us open and generous hearts
to see the needs of others
and to respond with compassion.
May the Church be blest with women
and men
who are dedicated to you through
marriage,
the single life, the diaconate,
priesthood,
and the consecrated life.
It is in Christ and through Christ
that we offer ourselves to you now and
forever. Amen.

WEEKLY MEDITATION
Baptism of the Lord
Many years ago, I knew a priest in the Twin
Cities who told me about his experience in the confessional. He said that he
was the confessor for an elderly woman who would come to him each week and
kneel in the dark and confess her sins. He said that each time he was
embarrassed because of her holiness and because of his own sinfulness. He was
able to recognize the Christ within her and in the experience found a personal
call to live a holier life.
In our day to day lives we may have many
opportunities to encounter Christ. But, often, those opportunities pass us by
and we fail to see Him as He stands before us. We fail to recognize Him.
In the gospel reading for this Sunday, we
are given a portion of one of the accounts of the baptism of Jesus by his
cousin John the Baptist. John has been preaching that someone will come along
who is the Messiah. On that particular day, when his cousin, a little known
carpenter from some insignificant little village, comes along, he recognizes
him as the One. John reacts as, I think, we all would in the presence of the
Holy One. He is embarrassed. He is flustered. He feels that it is Jesus who
should baptize him. However, he is called to serve Jesus by performing this
simple act of pouring water over his head and calling him to repent.
My priest friend could have walked away from
the confessional each week having heard the confession of an old woman and
thought nothing further of it. What made the experience unique was that, like
the Baptist was able to recognize the presence of the divine in an unexpected
place; in someone who might otherwise be considered insignificant.
In my life, I have had the honor of meeting
people who strike me with awe. When I am in their presence, I know that I am in
the presence of the Christ who calls me to serve him in them. They are not the great nor the powerful of this world or even of this
city. They are not the doers of great deeds nor even
of charitable deeds. They are not even the pious. They are the poor. They are
suffering. They are the marginalized. They ask nothing and have nothing to
offer in return for my kindness. I do know that each time I encounter them I
know I am in the presence of the One who calls me to serve Him. I do not have
to cross great oceans to seek them out for they live right here among us. You
will see them in church this weekend. You will pass them on the street this
coming week. You will meet them in your place of work. These people in whom the
Christ who calls us to service is found come into our lives every day. When we
fail to recognize the needing Jesus within them, we fail to serve Him.
In this day and age when so many people
wonder where they may encounter the divine, we would do well to follow the
example of John who was open to recognize Jesus and to offer him service.
Peace and
Blessing.
Deacon
Arthur Gil de Lamadrid
Question for Children: If
someone were to ask you, “who is Jesus?” how would you
answer?
Question for Youth: “This
is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.” This is what God said when Jesus was
baptized, and what God says about each of us, son and daughters of God, as we
are baptized. How can you more fully
embrace your baptism?
Question for Adults: Today’s
readings lead to a core question: As you follow God and do what he wants, how
do you experience his loving words: “You are my own. My favor is upon you.”?

RCIA Rite of Welcoming?
The Rite of
Welcoming is for inquirers who are ready to publicly declare their intention to
journey toward full communion with the Catholic Church. At this rite,
they are asked if they are ready to listen to the apostles' instruction, gather
with the worshipping community in prayer, and join that community in the love
and service of others. They are signed with the Cross to show that they
belong to Christ.
This week's
RCIA session at Holy Assumption Parish will focus on Love and Respect in the
