STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE

Today we remember the three wise men from the East who came to pay homage to the infant Jesus, bringing him rich gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.  The gifts we bring – our time and service and some share of what we earn for the work we do – are equally precious in His sight.

WEEKLY MEDITATION

JANUARY 6, 2008

FEAST OF THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD

Readings:  Isaiah 60:1-6; Psalm 72; Ephesians 3:2-3,5-6; Matthew 2:1-12

“Lord, every nation on earth will adore you.”                           (Psalm Antiphon)

The word EPIPHANY means manifestation, a showing or revealing.  A secondary meaning is given as “a demonstration of the existence, reality, or presence of a person.”  In several of the Epistles the author makes it clear that God has revealed or made clear to us the mystery of salvation as revealed in Jesus Christ.  Part of that mystery that was not understood very clearly in the time of the Hebrew Scriptures was that God wanted everyone to come to know the existence of the real God.

In Matthew’s Gospel the author tried to make clear to the Christians of his time, in the 80’s and 90’s, that God’s plan of salvation included the Gentiles, those who were not Jews.  This was a difficult problem in the early Church.  St. Paul ran into opposition when he began bringing his mission to the Gentiles.  St. Peter had to be reminded by the Holy Spirit that “what God has made clean, you are not to call profane.”  (See Acts of the Apostles, 10:15).

Since the time of the Apostles the question of who can be admitted to the Church has been a difficult problem.  Many rules and regulations still exist in the Church about how to become a Christian.  More important, however, is the question of how each of us treats others who might not be Christian today.  In some cases, we even have trouble with people who are Christian but who don’t meet our personal expectations.  A serious problem existed in the Church for centuries in relation to people of color.  Not only were they not allowed to sit at the front of the bus; they were often not even welcome in our parish churches.  In many areas of the world they had to have their own Catholic churches.

What is our attitude towards others today?  While we may have broken down the laws restricting the admission of everyone into our churches, our inner attitudes might be negative.  This feast is a good opportunity to do an examination of conscience.

Question for all:  When has God seemed most present to me during this Christmas season?”

“Jesus, be the world for me.  And let this world become more you through me; and let me become more you through this world.”  (Teilhard de Chardin)

“Now in Christ Jesus you who were far off have become near by the blood of Christ.”      (Ephesians 2:13)
